Early Fall Living Room Decor
It’s fall tour time hosted by my friend Marty at A Stroll Thru Life again. I’m always happy to be part of her great group because it is such a genuine group of nice talented bloggers with all kinds different styles.
Before I begin, I want to thank everyone for all the comments on my last post about my struggles with social media and blogging (click HERE to read it). I’m still working on answering them all. It really felt so good to know that everyone else is struggling where social media is heading. There is definitely a shift and I’m really scared that our kids grow up to think all this craziness is normal. I’m working on finding my happy medium which hopefully still allows me to be somewhat successful with my blog.
So lets get back to the tours. Welcome to everyone coming from Laura’s of Decor To Adore and lets start with my living room tour.
I called my tour early spring because well it is early spring and because it is hot outside and all my fall decor is in our 120 degree attic and I’m not climbing up there until it is a lot cooler. As I was typing this with all my photos taken already, it has really cooled down but will jump up again tomorrow.
My tour doesn’t have a single pumpkin in it. I only buy pumpkins that I can cook with and I haven’t found any that we wanted to eat yet. Hopefully our local produce stand will have our favorite pie pumpkins up for grabs soon.
Like every year, I did however come up with another floral arrangement which was this year inspired by plums and apples. We love eating them in late summer and early fall and I love their colors.
Don’t these flowers match perfectly with the colors of my favorite Fuji apples and plums? I love the pinks, purples and reds together.
If you’ve missed it, here are some example of what I’ve done in the previous years with flower arrangements:
To me they all represent fall without being typical fall decor. The blue thistle arrangement above was one of my favorites but I haven’t seen them sold at our local produce and floral place lately.
To me fall also means that I have to bring my plants inside again. They enjoyed their summer outside and have once again grown a lot which sometimes requires for me to find them new spots.

We still absolutely love our new living room chairs and the cats do too. They are still available HERE.
And for all you guys who have always wondered if I struggle with cat hair? Well yes I do, just look past the hair on my leopard pillow below.
Last week I showed you the garland I made (click HERE) which I now hang on the fireplace but also had wrapped around the basket in my last post. It’s super easy, you should try to make one because it is the first step to making you own a big one.
Or you can try to make the macrame feather I made (click HERE) which you can also hang on a basket or your purse.
You can see the macrame feather (HERE) I mentioned above on the left side of the basket.
I also bought this new plant for the top of our shelving unit where the cats can’t reach it.
It is a tradescantia zebrina, formerly known as zebrina pendula commonly known as an inchplant or wandering jew. I love the colors!
I think I love the garland better on the plant baskets though then the fireplace. You can see my woodbead on the fireplace below. The reason I moved it is the fact that the command hooks gave in several times and the heavy garland slammed to the ground which is not good since the cats like sleeping below. I need to find a new solution.
Here is the fireplace without any garland which I love too. It really doesn’t need anything. (You can see my mantel makeover HERE)
And for all of you who might have missed my bedroom update in the spring, you can click HERE. There is no need to update it for the fall.

I want to also share my grandmother and mother’s “Schichtorte” recipe with you this week (click HERE). Although it’s not a fall recipe, it’s become a September staple since my kids have September birthdays and always request this cake. It’s very yummy and I also make a gluten free version for our daughter.

your home looks so pretty! i love your fall arrangements.
Thanks my friend.
Well, it’s quite the toss up…do I love your home or cats the most! Seriously, I adore your style and keen sense of pattern and color! I did click and read your post on blogging. The struggle is so real. I’m much closer to 50 than you, and it’s so hard to compete with all the perfection out there. All the bloggers that are constantly changing their decor and furnishings baffles me. It’s the most unrealistic thing in the world. Don’t even get me started on the fashion bloggers. Keep doing what you are doing for the fun of it, and the rewards will come. Readers honestly to crave some normal out there!
Thanks Christy and I agree. I can’t wrap my head around how fast paced some of the blogs are and there is no way I can compete with that.
Julia you are such a talented floral designer! I love all of those arrangements! 🙂 Love sharing this tour with you and your beautiful eye for design.
Thanks so much Tammy
Julia, you first got me with your amazing mixing pattern and texture skills, then with your macrame creations and now look at those flower arrangements… They crazy good!! Well, you’re crazy talented!! Love your home!
Thank you so much Cristina, you are so sweet.
Julia I love the mix of patterns in your living room and that gorgeous flower arrangement is the perfect color combo for fall.
Thanks so much Deb. I love fall flowers.
Hi, Julia, I read your blogging post and girl, I totally agree! As someone who’s been blogging for so long, all of that social media social climbing drives me nuts too. I just can’t keep up with it all and so I stay in my little box and do my thing and don’t follow the crowds with everything going on. I think that’s the only way to stay sane in this online world now.
Your home is always so pretty and inspiring! I love your use of black and white, a fave of mine too. And your animal print as well, love that! You do a beautiful job, so just keep being YOU and let your own style shine through!
I agree Rhoda, that is probably the only way to stay sane, unless you hire a bunch of people to do it all for you.
And thank you so much.
who knew you were quite the floral artist?? beautiful arrangements Julia. enjoy the fall season and the september birthdays around your house.
Thanks Laura, I love making flower arrangements and there was a time in my life where I had considered being a florist. But I had lots of things I wanted to do, this was just one of them 😉
These are the most gorgeous floral arrangements I’ve seen. Kudos to you! Those kitties scattered throughout are pretty darn cute too. Thanks for sharing your beautiful and originally decorated home! So nice to see something that shows personality. Just lovely!
Thanks so much Maggie, I really appreciate your sweet words about my home.
Beautiful as always! I am so curious to know how you keep your cats from eating your plants that are poisonous. I have 4 cats and I am limited to which plants I can bring home because of their love of munching on them. The only real plants I have are hanging from the ceiling, which they cannot reach.
That’s a good question. I should write a blog post about our plant situation one day soon because I get that question all the time.
I don’t really have any poisonous plants in the house and my local nursery really helps me with all my questions. It also helps that my cats have plants that they can eat in our outdoor enclosure like grass and catnip.
The new plant on the shelving unit called wandering jew has sap in the stem that can irritate a cat’s digestive system if eaten, but the leaves don’t normally cause problems. The sap also tastes awful which usually also deters them from eating it.
On another note they can’t reach it on the shelving unit and don’t try to reach it either. They aren’t interested.
The rest of the plants I have are ok with them too and they don’t touch my flowers. I guess the trick is giving them plants they can eat and avoiding poisonous plants all together.
Love all your fall touches, the colors are so pretty in your floral arrangement!
Thanks Bethany!
I love splurging on flowers from the local market.
Beautiful! Everything is so warm and cozy and I just want to cuddle those cats!! I love all of your fall floral arrangements too – gorgeous color choices!
Love all of your fall touches, Julia!
wunderschöne Blumendekoideen für den Herbst…toll! Jetzt könnte ich sogar einen Lebkuchen essen 🙂
I just love your floral arrangements, Julia! Every year you out do yourself! Lovely tour!
Oh my goodness I am crazy about your fall flower arrangements! Love the thistle, and all your rich jewel tones. The flowers are fruits are so elegant!
So happy to be on this fall tour with you. Have a great fall!
Your house look so pretty and the flowers you have all around are gorgeous! But the best part that says this house is comfy cozy for fall is the sleeping kitties. Nothing like a soft, warm fur baby to snuggle up with on a crisp autumn day.
Oh my goodness, the flowers!!! I love those colors — the purple/aubergine and wine colors are so perfect for this season!! Love the light and airy but still warm and cozy for fall:-)
your home is beautiful as always- love all your fall touches! Your kitty is the cutest! Have a wonderful weekend.
So pretty! Always love your tour! And your chairs are my favorite in your family room!
Your tour is always one of my favorites and I look forward to it each season! Your florals are all amazing! What a natural talent you have!!! And, I can’t wait to check out that recipe!
Your fall home tour is perfection my friend!!! I have to pick my jaw up off the floor – your floral arrangements are seriously stunning!! xo Heather
Your fall floral arrangements are so pretty! Who needs pumpkins when you have bountiful arrangements like those. You should have a second career as a floral designer!
