More fireplace sources and details

Today I have lots more details and sources to share with you about our fireplace area makeover. If you missed Monday’s post then you can click HERE to see the reveal.

But lets start with some old photos of the area. The first one is really old. I love seeing how my photography has changed as well over the years. Old photos like this make me cringe you guys.

In the photos you can certainly see the part of the fireplace mantel that bugged me. The sides were too thin and there was barely any molding on the top part. I just really wanted it all to be chunkier and thicker. Like I said yesterday, it was harder to achieve than I thought because of the limited space of the corner area. If it would have been a centered fireplace, I would have gone even chunkier than I ended up building.

Here is the plan that I came up with before starting and I came pretty close to achieving it:

 

So I ripped out the entire old mantel and started from scratch:

That’s when I ended up deciding to keep the tan marble surround because after moving the chairs into the basement, it wasn’t an overload of tan anymore. My son loves them in the basement now as gaming chairs.

I had to patch everything before I started and painted it as well.

Like I said yesterday, I don’t really have a tutorial because of my injured hand. It was just too much and I was struggling with building it, let a lone taking photos along the way.

I started with building the side pieces, aka legs and then built the top part. I wanted it all to stick out further than it had before.

But here are some progress photos which show a little bit more about the detail of the mantel. And you guys have no clue how many runs to Home Depot and Lowes I made because I ruined the MDF or molding cuts. One of the reasons I love Home Depot  so much is because they also rip and do regular cuts. At Lowes they don’t rip it for you (which is a full length cut) and I was so annoyed with them during one of my runs that I told them why I like going to Home Depot better for wood and molding even though it’s further away. You can also cut the molding to what ever you need which you can’t at Lowes. You have to purchase an entire long piece of molding even if you only need a tiny piece. That’s a huge reason I always go to Home Depot for molding.

I finished it all up with thick molding before attaching it to the wall. Liquid nails and caulk were once again my best friends in finishing this project. I also primed the mantel with Kilz waterbased primer (click HERE) and my favorite cabinet paint (click HERE).

The photo above shows the fireplace detail and of course my new gorgeous art from Minted. To me it really was the finishing touch. Like you saw in the photos above, I never had artwork above the fireplace before. I’ve always had mirrors. So this is a really nice change and the area wouldn’t be the same without it.
