How to make Christmas ornaments with macrame yarn (5 free patterns)
Since spending so much time this year making accessories with macrame yarn, I of course have to make macrame ornaments as well. So today I want to show you how to make Christmas ornaments with macrame yarn that are super easy to make and most of them can be made with scrap macrame cords that you might have left from other projects throughout the year.
A lot of my macrame tutorials that I have made can be easily repurposed as macrame Christmas ornaments which I will get into below.

Instructions on how to make Christmas ornaments with macrame yarn
Below is a video tutorial. Use the triangle on the image to turn on the video.
Start by cutting your yarn. I used 5 pieces of macrame yarn cut at 20 inches long and one small 6-inch piece for a short piece to hang the macrame ornament.
- Fold the 6-inch piece in half, knot it at the ends and loop it over a wooden ring with a Lark’s Head knot as pictured below.
- Then grab your 5 pieces of macrame yarn and put one to the side for later. Fold 4 pieces in half and also loop the on the wooden ring with Lark’s Head knots.
- Grab your 5th piece of macrame yarn and lip the yarn from the wooden ring around the 5th piece with horizontal Half Hitch knots as pictured. Usually, when making macrame you don’t add a new piece of yarn but use the outside string on each side. For this one, I wanted extra string though which is why I added an extra piece.
- Continue the Half Hitch knots to the other side of the little macrame hanging.
- Then all you have to do is unravel the yarn, comb everything, and trim the ends evenly. This is where you could use the fabric stiffener to stiffen the fringe but this time I didn’t do that.
And voila you are done.
The piece also looks great as a little decorative wall hanging which you can use on your car mirror or as a purse charm.

My other macrame tutorials used as Christmas ornaments
macrame garland turned macrame Christmas ornament
The below macrame ornament is done according to my beginner macrame garland tutorial. The difference is that I only used one section minus the wooden beads on each side.
And I used free sticks from outside instead of knotting onto a piece of yarn as I did with the garland.
Can you believe that Free People sell the exact same little ornament HERE for $32!?!? That’s crazy, right? The only difference to theirs is that they left the strings longer and didn’t unravel and comb the yarn as I did.
macrame wreath turned macrame Christmas ornament
Can you believe that this little macrame star Christmas ornament is the same thing as my macrame wreath? The only differences are that I didn’t add the thick wool, used 3 mm yarn (so it would fit on the wooden ring), and stiffened and shaped the fringe to a star. Other than that it is the exact same thing on a smaller scale.
Below is a photo to refresh your memory. I should also mention that I made only 5 points to the star as well with 20 20-inch pieces of yarn. And obviously only one row of points.
Look below, doesn’t the macrame snowflake look cute hanging on my desk?
macrame Feathers as Christmas ornaments
Almost 3 years ago I made macrame feathers and they also make the perfect easy and affordable Christmas ornaments. I love them multicolored or in plain ivory color. For the ones below I used 3mm macrame yarn. Check out my tutorial.
easy macrame gnomes
If you have a lot of macrame cord scraps then you need to make some easy macrame gnome ornaments. They are so cute and make a great gift as well.
half-moon tassel embellishments as Christmas ornaments
As I mentioned above, I shared my boho Christmas tree with you last week where I added the half-moon tassel embellishments that I made over the summer as macrame Christmas ornaments.
RELATED: My macrame earrings can also be replaced with a wooden ring instead of the hoop earring and hung on a tree as well as an ornament.
Different use for these mini macrame hangings
These types of tiny macrame hangings also make great party favors or hostess gifts. Just look how cute they look around the neck of a bottle of wine.
Or you can hang them as a purse charm on your favorite bag.
Below you can see my macrame heart pieces next to the macrame Christmas ornaments. The hearts could also be used as ornaments or gift toppers.
Where to buy macrame ornaments
If you don’t feel like making your own macrame ornaments but love the look then you can also buy them online. Here are a bunch of my favorites.
If you need more ornament ideas then check out my gingerbread Christmas ornaments made from cardboard, my favorite wooden German Christmas ornaments, easy honeycomb ornament, or plastic painted Christmas ornaments.
That’s it for today. I hope you’ll give these a try and have fun crafting over the holidays the way I do. It’s so comforting to me.
Happy Holidays.

Yikes! Did you see the Free People macrame Christmas tree for $150? That might be on my list of things to dupe!! I made your star ornament out of my scrapes. Next one I’ll try the double knots and or rows you also show.
No, I didn’t see it. Going to check it out now. Glad you were able to make the star. It’s my favorite!
that star is my favorite! these are absolutely amazing, julia!
What size wooden ring did you use?
I believe they are 2-inch rings. I linked to the exact ones I bought in the post. Good luck!
What size macrame yarn are you using for the ring ornaments? I have 5mm yarn, I think, and 2 inch rings. But the yarn seems quite large for the rings. They don’t look quite the same. I’m wondering if you use 3mm or 4mm yarn to make them with?
Yes that’s a bit large, I used some 4mm and 3mm scraps I had left and linked to the yarn that I used.
