Dead Celebrities Costume: My Diane Keaton Look
I usually make my Halloween costume from scratch, but this year I couldn’t. Ever since we moved our kids into their apartments on August 7th, I’ve had horrible arm pain. I finally went to the doctor at the end of September, and after an X-ray, he determined it is tennis elbow. He then ordered a Percutaneous Needle Tenotomy, which was unsuccessfully performed in early October. I was still in way too much pain after being numbed, and he couldn’t finish it. So then he finally sent me to get an MRI, and it turns out I have a small tear in my tendon.
So this is why I have been very silent and unproductive in regards to any DIY and crafts for my blog, and it is frustrating me since even just typing on my computer hurts and should probably be avoided, but thankfully I can mostly voice dictate a blog post too.
Instead of coming up with my usual costume DIY, which I love doing, I pulled my costume together from what was already in my closet.
The theme for our neighborhood Halloween party was dead celebrity costumes. While it was definitely my least favorite theme ever, it made things easier for me this year. I went as Diane Keaton. If you’re short on time (or have an arm injury), a dead celebrity costume is an easy way out. The younger folks at the party had no clue who I was, while the older people like me did know.

Diane Keaton mixed menswear pieces like blazers, ties, and hats with feminine ones like a full skirt, so her look was easy to pull together from my closet. There are so many great inspiration images online that showcase her unique sense of fashion.
- Contrast stripe a-line skirt
- Dr Martens boots
- tuxedo blazer jacket
- wide black belt
- black glasses
- white shirt (a white turtle neck or scarf would have been better but I didn’t have either in my closet)
- blond straight wig (gray would have been good too)
- black hat (It wasn’t the perfect shape, but I have trouble finding hats for my large head. She loved vintage-inspired bowler or felt cloche hats)

The finished Diane Keaton look at the party
My hubby didn’t go this year because he was away. That also meant I had one less costume to worry about.

My bestie as Dolly Parton.

What did other people wear to the dead celebrities costume party?
If you’re stuck on what to wear to a dead celebrities costume party, here’s what everyone else came up with. Some of these need a wig and a few closet pieces, and others need one standout item, like a hat, a jacket, or a pair of glasses. Pick someone whose look you can mostly pull together from what you already own, and add one or two online buys to fill in the gaps.
- Dolly Parton
- Oliver Tree
- Freddie Mercury
- Marilyn Monroe
- Elvis Presley
- Lucille Ball
- Catherine O’Hara (as Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek)
- Olivia Newton-John (as Sandy Olsson in black Grease outfit)
- Olivia Newton-John (as Sandy Olsson in Pink Ladies jacket)
- Several Hugh Hefners
- Hulk Hogan
- Amy Winehouse
- Selena (Selena Quintanilla-Pérez)
- KFC Colonel Sanders
- Bob Ross
- Gus Polinski (John Candy) with Kate McCallister (Catherine O’Hara)
- Audrey Hepburn
- Ruth Bader Ginsburg
- “Macho Man” Randy Savage
- Bob Denver as Gilligan
- Mary Ann Summers in Gilligan’s Island (Dawn Wells)
- Farrah Fawcett (skateboard poster)
- Abraham Lincoln (with top hat)
- Val Kilmer (as Batman)
- New York Yankees Sam McDowell
- Bonnie and Clyde
- Princess Diana (in Harvard sweatshirt outfit)
- Kenny Rogers
- Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes
- Steve Irwin with snake around the neck
- David Bowie (lightning bolt makeup and blue suit)

The Selena purple glitter outfit is a great last-minute find. Of course, it pays off to have beautiful natural hair like this, too.

For a different party, I did manage to apply some Paul Stanley KISS face paint on my neighbor even with a painful arm!
