Easy Dark Angel Costume and Make-up
Ever since our daughter was little I loved putting costumes together by starting with a simple black or white dress because she used to have sensory issues. She is now passed that but the simple dress has remained even though last year we didn’t use one for the elf fairy costume. We have used the simple dress however for the sad clown costume, day of the Dead costume, queen of Hearts costume DIY, and DIY Maleficent costume. And we are using a simple black dress again for this dark angel costume with only a few simple accessories and dramatic make-up that makes a big impact.

When I was young, I loved the TV show Dark Angel with Jessica Alba and that is what I used as inspiration. This costume is just my own take on what I think a dark angel or fallen angel should look like. I guess you could call it “Raven Girl” too or an angel costume with a dark side influenced by the devil or whatever else comes to your mind when you look at it. To me, Halloween costumes are about letting your imagination run wild and dressing up in something that you usually can’t or wouldn’t. This time of year, my daughter tends to like the more scary villains and wouldn’t just go for a good plain angel Halloween costume and that’s the fun of this season, am I right?
Supplies needed for the dark angel costume
- dark angel wings (or these black wings might work too or these big black wings)
- feather shawl which hides the black angle wing straps (HERE)
- simple black dress (kids and adults but you can, of course, go a sexy route for women as an adult dark angel costume with a short mini dress or leather pants like Jessica Alba sported for her show)
- wig (if you don’t have the desired hair)
- makeup brushes (HERE)
- mascara (HERE)
- makeup: pore filler (HERE, not a must but I love it), pale foundation (HERE), HD finishing powder (HERE), black eye shadow (my favorite HERE), and various red eye shadows (I used this cheap palette HERE called “red alert”), very fine black eyeliner for veins (HERE) or a temporary vein tattoo HERE, blending sponges HERE
Since this is a fallen angel, I don’t think the costume should have a halo, but what do I know 😉
Instructions
To see the process I made another video because it’s easier to show you that way than taking separate photos along the way. If the video doesn’t work, you can also watch it on my YouTube channel instead.
{spoiler alert: Walter is making an appearance too}
Dark Angel Makeup
- Start by applying the pore filler on your face
- Evenly apply the pale makeup
- You can lightly dust the face with the HD finishing powder now or after the eye shadow. In this case, I applied it before the red eye shadow because I didn’t want to take away the sheen of it
- Add various shades of red to the eyes and mouth
- Contour the temples, jaw, cheeks, and nose with the black eye shadow
- Create a smokey eye with the mat black eye shadow and also add some black to the center of the lips
- Then it’s time for some pretty thin eyeliner and mascara
- Lastly, I added veins to the eyes and lips but you don’t have to do this extra step. We just liked them and thought they added to the look.
Make sure you watch the video to get a better idea of the process.
It’s a pretty simple costume that looks unique and can be altered in many different ways.
Finished Dark Angel Costume
Like I said above, for the adult version you could wear a short black dress or leather pants and a cute top. A black wig would look cool too maybe with a crown. The nice thing is that my daughter and I can wear our simple black dress throughout the year too and not just for Halloween
RELATED: You could wear this black dress (or any other simple black outfit) with my scary scarecrow mask that I recently made.
For shoes, she is just wearing black combat boots.
I hope you enjoyed this year’s Halloween costume. We had fun creating it again and I love having the photos of her as memories. So if you try to recreate this and wear it to your next party then email me a photo. I’d love to see it.
