Dark Blue Girls Room
I’m so thrilled to share my daughter’s dark blue girl’s room with you today. In case you missed our plans for her room then you can see them HERE and a post about the hanging macrame chair HERE.
I really let my daughter do a lot of the choosing and styling. It was a little challenging at times to not jump in and change something. She really has her own mind and doesn’t want my opinion anymore. “Mom, where do you think this should go?” won’t come out of her mouth. (Read about my tips for decorating with a teenage girl.
One thing we have in common is the love for pillows and I gave her some existing pillows to chose from.

It is incredibly hard to photograph her room with the dark color on the walls and the color doesn’t show up the exact same way as it is in reality in the photos. The shadows were also a big challenge.
So this is all her. She even went out and bought the craft cart and a label maker from her piggy bank money.
One of her new requests was the picture ledges (HERE) and that we’d hang her medals from the bottom of the ledges with command hooks (THESE). And I agree with her that it is a great way to display them, don’t you?
She mixed some of her own art, some of my art, a favorite quote, some sketches and a piece by my friend.
Our kids storage tips
- Command hooks under picture ledges (HERE) for medals or hairbands.
- Fun boxes and containers for her craft supplies (HERE or HERE).
- Light weight, cheap frames without glass for kids art display (HERE or HERE). The reason for that is that if they fall there won’t be a dangerous mess.
- Use a small desk clip light to free up desk space for crafting, coloring and homework (HERE).
- crafting glitter for slime (HERE) stored in a lipstick organizer (HERE)
- condiment bottles/food service squeeze bottles for slime ingredients like water, laundry detergent and glue (HERE)
- Dry-erase tape (HERE) for larger labels.
{ Read my post HERE about how to organize slime supplies and a closer look at her craft cart}
(The piggy bank and small dolls container are from HomeGoods and are Jonathan Adler. Unfortunately, they aren’t available anymore)
My friend Lydia (see her Etsy store HERE) sent me one of her art pieces and it is made for my daughter’s room. And the little one loves it too.
You can find the $6 lama printable HERE and the abstract art is my free printable if you sign up for my email list.
The below print of Maya was made with the same app that I described in my last post HERE.

She wanted the macrame piece in her room and it looks much better in here than in my downstairs.
She also snatched up the Moravian star I had in my downstairs hallway. My husband just wants better lighting in our hallway and it looks so pretty in her room now. I love when I can reuse and find new spots for decor from our home.
It’s actually a lot of fun to see her starting to want to organize. She’s always been a hot mess with everything but now she is starting to get really excited about the little organizing thrills. I know that sounds odd but when she had me order her the label maker (HERE) with her piggy bank money, she couldn’t stop talking about it and told me that she thought she couldn’t sleep because she was so excited. I think it’s cute.
She also loves using this dry-erase tape (HERE) for labeling:
Rolling craft storage HERE.
She started organizing all her slime concoctions and even labels their lids with fun names that she comes up with:
(find containers HERE)
And the glitter (this one HERE) she uses to make that mentioned slime is being stored in a lipstick organizer (HERE):
Her gold sparkly cuckoo clock is still in the room as well and I love how it looks on the dark blue walls:
She really wanted a cactus in her room but I didn’t find it all that safe for her and the cats so I bought a faux one from Ikea. It’s so fun and sculptural and easy to care for.
Also the matryoshka dolls are from my husband who brought from Prague for me and my daughter (HERE for similar ones).
The kitties love her room as always.

I’m thrilled that we were able to keep her curtains (HERE) and I think they look great with the new dark blue walls.
We used one of our old end tables from the fireplace makeover as a nightstand and functions and looks great.
Oh Willy! You are so photogenic and love to pose. I just can’t help myself but take photos of him. He loves the camera attention.
The cheap Craiglist mirror is still hanging behind her door. One of my first blog projects ever (HERE the photography is awful). I received two identical mirrors for free back then and I still cherish both of them. One is hanging in the spare bathroom and the other right here in her room.

Also, see my post HERE about her new Ikea chandelier pictured below:
I wanted to share a before photo for those of you who are new around here. I loved her before but it was more me than her. She’s been asking to redo it for a while and now I love both versions. By the way, you can purchase all four paint-by-number art pieces for download in my Etsy shop HERE. The acrylic chair is available HERE.

I believe she has talent in styling her own room and real potential for organizing. But… don’t even think for a minute that it always looks like this 😉 It’s a work in progress.
In the end she is enjoying being creative as much as I do. She just has her own ideas and I’m not allowed to cross her.
I believe she did a great job styling her shelves and adding all her trinkets and crafts.
Tschüß,
oh i LOVE this! and now i am wonering if i shouldn’t put emmy’s dresser in her closet and put her craft stuff against her wall… it looks so good like that!!!! and i love the ledge with all the art- great idea, lilly!
Thank you! She loves the art ledge so much better then the last art dimply and I do too. Those cheap Ikea frames are perfect to stack too because they are so thin.
The white window treatment board with Lilly’s name, where did you find that or did you make it? Traci
It looks awesome–great job, Lilly! Love the picture ledge and the wall color, and still in love with that hanging chair! And welcome to my world–trying to photograph navy walls–and I’m about to paint ANOTHER room navy!
Let me know if you ever find out the secret to photographing a navy wall! And thank you
This room turned out great! I was a little nervous too but baby girl made some great choices. Perfect for a teen girl. (Don’t tell but I think kitties are my favorite, perhaps because they’re warm and fuzzy.)
Oh I will tell because they are our favorite part too. Willy runs and jumps on the swinging chair so it swings a lot when he sits on it. He loves swinging in the chair and looks more like a little lemur when he is using it.
Lilly’s room is fun and creative. A great place to show her artistic as well as her sport talents. Of course, a couple of furry critics seem to show their approval.
Thanks Susan! Yes the cats love her room
She did a great job! I think the photos of the wall color turned out well too. Love the kitty photo-bombs too. 🙂
Thanks Becky! Willy is such a poser and loves to hog the camera.
Totally adorable! Love everything – the color, hanging chair and the craft center! What a great idea to use command hooks! Lilly is an artist for sure!
Thanks Kathleen! I’m thrilled that she loves to create things too
Lilly did a fantastic job and I agree with you that she does have talent!!! Wish I’d had a room like this as a teenager!
I will tell her 😉 And I wish I had a room like this too when I was a teenager
What a beautiful makeover Julia. I love the moody new color on the wall. It makes everything else pop 🙂 Love the craft cart with all the glitter too 🙂 Lily is so lucky!
I always regret letting her have glitter because it ends up everywhere but I get it, glitter is just so much fun. Thanks Katja!
I can imagine that it wasn’t easy to let Lilly do with her room what she wanted to but she did such a great job! I love the navy walls combined with the light colored furniture. The room looks beautiful and organized. It’s so cute that Lilly was so excited about getting the labeling machine. My parents would have been delighted if I had shown any interest in organizing my teenage room. It was always just a big mess. The kitties seem to be happy with the changes too and they look adorable as always.
I can’t remember if I was ever this excited about organizing when I was her age but we didn’t really have labeling machines 😉 LOL And yes the kitties are very happy with the new room. The hanging chair is a big hit!
Lilly’s room makeover came out so great Julia! Love the new wall color, and your daughter’s extensive slime and glitter collection, wow!! Such a cool room for hanging out and creating. Hope she is loving it!
You deserve alllll the mom points for letting her take the lead in updating her room! I remember begging to redecorate my room when I was maybe 12 or 13, and shopping for paint colors with my mom is such a special memory. Lilly did such a good job!
Love all of this!! My daughter and I both pinned your pics and now she wants to do her room like this. Thank you! How do I sign up for the abstract prints??
Sorry for the delayed response. I’m so glad you like it and always appreciate Pinterest saves and shares. You can use this link and scroll to the bottom for the printables https://cuckoo4design.com/free-printables/
I may have missed it, but what paint color did you use?
Hi Mindy, it’s Indigo Cloth by Valspar.
Where did you get that chandelier? I want to remodel my room and LOVE that light!!!
Note – When I say Light, I mean the cloth one with the blue tips
Hi, I was wondering where you got the CLOTH light with the blue tips, or if you made can you send me a link to the DIY, (And/Or the link to where you bought it)
Hi Lydia, unfortunately, that was a limited edition Ikea chandelier and isn’t available anymore.
My daughter was very inspired by this design. She loved it so much she did her room in the same color! Thank you so much for posting all the links to colors, shelves, etc. It made this project WAY easier!! Wish I could add a pic! Everything looks amazing!
Oh that made my day, Traci! I’ so glad you guys like it.
