DIY full face of googly eyes makeup

Last year, I never got a chance to post about our Halloween costume for the annual neighborhood party since I did our full face of googly eyes makeup on the actual day of Halloween, and I didn’t want to post about it in November. So now is a great time to show you guys.

I first discovered this creepy makeup in several different TikTok makeup artist videos and wanted to see if we were able to do the same on our aging, wrinkly skin LOL. Let me tell you, it definitely was a bit of a challenge, and it took longer than expected, which is why I didn’t have enough time for my own face anymore and why it is only half finished on my face.

A quick heads-up before you scroll further: If you have an aversion to dozens of small, clustered circles, or clusters of holes and small bumps, which is known as a psychological phenomenon called trypophobia, then this blog post and video are probably not for you.

Step-by-step googly eye makeup instructions

Although the process of gluing the googly eyes onto the face is rather time-consuming, the individual steps are pretty straightforward. Let me show you below.

Step 1: Glue down eyebrows (and other facial hair)

It is important to conceal or block out your eyebrows and, in my husband’s case, also his sideburns. I used a simple, washable, non-toxic craft glue stick to smooth down my husband’s facial hair.

It is best to first go against the grain of the hair and then smooth the hair down by following the direction in which the hair grows. This way, the glue coats both sides of the hair. You can apply several layers.

Step 2: Enlarge your forehead surface

This makeup looks best if you increase the size of your forehead so it goes way back into your hoodie or cape. I achieved this by wrapping my husband’s head in Saran wrap. I simply knotted it on the Saran wrap on the back of the head.

And then followed that up with several layers of white medical tape stuck over the Saran wrap and around the head. The Saran wrap prevents the tape from sticking to the hair.

Step 3: Paint the entire face white

Next, I applied several layers of white face paint with a brush. Let the paint dry between layers for best results.

Step 4: Randomly glue the googly eyes to the face

I ended up using Spirit Gum to glue the googly eyes to the face. After applying the first couple of eyes, I noticed that I forgot to peel off the backing paper of the googly eyes, which is why they didn’t stick well at first. So make sure you peel that paper off before using the glue to adhere the googly eyes to the face.
(I had planned on testing eyelash glue as well, but my order got lost in the mail, and I didn’t feel like spending more money.)

Note: I used some clear craft glue to adhere the googly eyes to the areas where I used the medical tape.

The trickiest areas were around the mouth because talking and eating are a challenge with the eyeballs glued on, and that’s where they started to fall off first as the Halloween party night was progressing.

I could have glued smaller googly eyes into the gaps, but I just didn’t have the time. I think it looks great regardless.

You can also skip the white face paint and just glue the eyes to your face without it.

And that’s it!

Finished googly eye makeup

We simply paired the makeup with all-black hoodies and black pants. The wrinkles and cracks in the white face makeup make it look even creepier, don’t you think?

Below you can see what the makeup looks like with black contacts and more black eye makeup. (Disclosure: I didn’t; I just photoshopped that into my image of my husband, but it’s easily done with some eyeliner and contact lenses. We had bought the contacts, and he tried putting them in and couldn’t handle the feeling of wearing them.)

And here is the difference if it were all black sclera contact lenses.

I do wish I had had more time before the party to finish my face, but as you can see in one of the following photos that includes me, I salvaged the time crunch issue by painting my face half black when I ran out of time. That looks pretty cool as well.

Also, I simply put on a black beanie because I also didn’t have time to enlarge my forehead, which worked out great. I added black sunglasses to hide the unfinished eye makeup. I should have won an award for winging it, don’t you think so?

Here is a photo of us by the end of the night. My son and his girlfriend were the Paris Louvre jewelry thieves, and my husband was missing all the googly eyes around his mouth, but it held up for several hours. As you can see the makeup also rubbed off onto his hoodie but it came out in the wash.

So what do you think of this creepy makeup? It was a hit at the party, even though we didn’t have an official name for the costume.
