I’m sure that you know that bistro chairs have a natural habitat on the streets and sidewalks of Paris, right? But did you know that with the Haussmann urban reorganization (commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III), the streets of Paris were expanded and pedestrian sidewalks were added, which was perfect for outdoor bistros?
The Maison Louis Drucker (founded in 1885) and Maison Gatti have been the main manufacturers of bistro chairs and are still using traditional weaving techniques to craft these beauties. You can identify the originals by the metal labels of Maison Drucker or Maison Gatti. Back in the day, these chairs were woven from rattan, but today, they’re mostly made of Rilsan (high-performance polyamide polymer), a bio-based and more durable material, or metal to give that rattan or bamboo look.
