My new custom black and gold vanity light

Sorry that I was a slacker on Monday and didn’t write a post. Well actually I shouldn’t call myself a slacker because I was pretty busy between hanging my new vanity light and doing things with my kids. It wasn’t as easy as I would have wished because I had to re-cut and re-wire the electrical box and then fix the drywall and of course I had a stud in the way. That issue was solved with a pancake box. I’m not going to write a tutorial about it because electricity scares me and I’m in no position to give electrical advise to anyone. You are probably just better off hiring a professional. Regardless it took all weekend, especially the drying and sanding time and touching up the stencil (click HERE if you missed my stencil post).

I’m glad it’s up and am happy with my results. I can only rave about the great Etsy shop who made this light for me. Jay of RetroSteamWorks was so helpful and I might have squealed when I opened the box from him with the light in it. It’s just so much better than anything I could have ever ordered from a big home improvement store with all the standard builder grade vanity lighting.

It ended up looking a little off  when I hung it because I’m still waiting for the new mirror which is higher than my old black one and because of the way the squares are located in the pattern, it looks a little off centered which it actually isn’t. But I can live with that.

And I know that everyone likes this black mirror, myself included but it’s just way too hard to keep clean with all the little mirror cut-outs and the water plashing all over it all the time when people wash their hands. I think I will use it somewhere else in the house though.

Remember my moodboard with the mirror I want? You can see the same light but all in gold. I just didn’t have a photo of it in black and brass.

You guys have no idea how hard it is to take photos in this tiny powder room and my wide angle lens makes it look bigger than it actually is.

When I installed the light, I was first a little surprised how dark it made my powder room look. It looked like a loungy type bathroom which looks cool but since I do my makeup and hair in it every morning, I wanted it to be lighter in this little space without windows. And I’m so proud of myself because I figured out a way to have this beautiful sconce and make it shine even brighter. It’s such an easy fix and you don’t even need any DIY skills.

See how far up the standard 60 watt bulbs are in the metal shade?

It’s as simple as buying some socket extenders like the following picture (click HERE) which when screwed in brings the bulb closer to the edge.

Depending on the depth of your pendant or sconce you need to add more than one. The point is, like I mentioned above, to get the bulb closer to the edge of the shade so the light can spread more. It really works great.

I’m not a fan of standard vanity lighting so this was the perfect solution for me to have this pretty sconce light with the benefit of more bright light. Win-win I say!

I can’t wait to finish up my powder room with the mirror when it finally gets here.

What’s next on my agenda? I think I will start ripping out my fireplace mantel and rebuilding it but I need to borrow a table saw first.
