Kitchen island pendant lighting ideas (for gray and white kitchen)
I have something different for you today! I’m sharing a gorgeous gray and white kitchen and some kitchen island pendant light ideas with you. This kitchen belongs to one of my oldest and dearest friends and is in their new construction home. When I saw it, I just had to ask if I could take photos to share on my blog.
It’s such a beautiful and spacious kitchen. You can easily have three people stand comfortably between the island and wall cabinets.

Pendant lighting doesn’t just brighten your space; it defines the mood and style of your kitchen. The right fixtures can highlight your island, create visual balance, and tie together finishes like hardware, flooring, and countertops.
When choosing pendant lights for your kitchen island, consider:
- Size and scale: Make sure the fixture is proportional to your island.
- Shape and style: Round, linear, or geometric pendants set different moods.
- Metal finish: Coordinate or mix metals with cabinet hardware and faucets.
- Height: Generally 28–34 inches above the countertop works well.
4 Different kitchen island pendant lighting ideas for this gray and white kitchen
My friend is still planning to add pendant lighting over the island, and I thought it would be fun to show some options to inspire you, or help you envision your own kitchen island lighting.

My friend had asked me if I could just add some lighting in Photoshop since she wasn’t sure yet what to get. I thought it would be fun to just show some options here on my blog, to show you how different kitchen island pendant lighting can make a space look and feel.
So here are some different options and looks picture below.
Option 1: Hicks Pendant Light
These iconic pendants combine bronze and gold tones, perfect for mixing metals. Their classic dome shape adds sophistication without feeling heavy. They would pair beautifully with existing hardware or a gold faucet. (Hicks Pendant)
Option 2: Black and natural wood pendant light
This pendant adds warmth through natural wood while keeping the palette neutral. It’s a great way to balance cooler gray tones with organic textures. (Black and natural wood pendant light)
Option 3: Honeycomb pendant light
For something more decorative, the capiz honeycomb globe pendant adds shimmer and texture that catches the light beautifully. Ideal for kitchens where you want lighting to make a statement. (Honeycomb pendant light)
Option 4: Linear 8-Light Chandelier
Perfect if you have one ceiling light wiring like in this kitchen. This modern transitional fixture works well above longer islands and adds plenty of light without needing multiple pendants. (modern transitional linear hanging island 8-light candlestick chandelier),

Choosing lighting when you only have one ceiling box
Not every kitchen allows multiple pendants. The linear chandelier can be a stylish solution if you don’t want to rewire. This approach works beautifully with my friend’s existing metal finishes and carries a design element across the space. For example, black details on her stair rails or door hardware, which I am showing you below.

Tips for Mixing Metallic Finishes in Your Kitchen
Many people are afraid to mix metals in the kitchen, but I think it creates a more layered, interesting look. Here’s how to do it successfully:
- Combine warm and cool tones for balance (gold + nickel or bronze + silver).
- Keep finishes consistent within each color family.
- Repeat each metal at least twice in the room to create cohesion.
- Use hardware or lighting to tie mixed finishes together.

This gray and white kitchen’s product sources
- Kitchen Cabinets: The upper cabinets are Divinity, and the lower cabinets are Dove Grey by Wellborn.
- Subway Tile: I really love the Jeffrey Court weather grey glossy subway tiles backsplash. She bought them at Home Depot. Unfortunately, that lighter gray is out of stock, and they only carry a Jeffrey Court gloss gray subway tile at the moment. It is much darker. This crafted silver glossy subway ,tile at Lowes appears to look similar but I haven’t seen it in person.
- Vinyl Plank Flooring: In case you are wondering about the flooring. Â It is Fusion Hybrid Barnwood Gray vinyl plank flooring and is very durable. It looks like beautiful real wood.
- Cabinet Hardware: oil rubbed bronze arch cabinet hardware handle pulls
- Kitchen Faucet: MOEN Brantford Single-Handle Smart Touchless Pull-Down Sprayer Kitchen Faucet
- Counter Stools: Round Wood and Metal Adjustable Swivel Stool

Gray and white kitchen design highlights
Beyond lighting, this kitchen has several thoughtful design elements:
Choosing the right cabinets
Two-toned cabinets are a great way to add depth and interest. Light upper cabinets keep the space bright, while gray lower cabinets ground the kitchen. When picking shades, make sure the gray complements your flooring and countertop colors. There are lots of gray tone variations from cool to warm.
Backsplash ideas that pop
Glossy subway tiles, like the Jeffrey Court weather gray tiles used here, are classic yet modern. For extra visual interest, try a herringbone pattern or mix subtle metallic accents. Lighter shades brighten the space, while medium grays add depth.
My friend wanted to keep it neutral, but if you aren’t afraid of color, then the backsplash is a perfect area to add a pop of color.
Here are some other patterns and colors that would look great in this kitchen:

Flooring tips for high-traffic kitchens
Vinyl plank flooring that mimics real wood is both durable and stylish. Choose colors with natural undertones to complement cabinet finishes. Lighter gray shades make the kitchen feel larger and reflect more light, while darker tones add warmth.
Countertop styling tips
White quartz countertops are perfect for a timeless look. Add personality with simple decor like a vase of flowers, a bowl of fruit, or a small plant. Keep countertops uncluttered to make your pendant lighting stand out as a design feature.
Coordinating hardware and fixtures
Mix metals intentionally. For example, pair oil-rubbed bronze cabinet pulls with a gold or bronze-accent faucet. Repeat each metal at least twice in the kitchen to maintain a cohesive look. This also ties in with your lighting choices for a unified design.
Pendant placement and height
For optimal lighting and aesthetics, hang pendants 28–34 inches above your island. Space multiple pendants evenly, leaving 24–30 inches between them. Linear chandeliers work well for single ceiling boxes, while round pendants add visual interest when spaced correctly.

Look at my friend’s puppy, Abby, in the kitchen. She matches!

And I have to share my friend’s other cute puppy Harry with you hiding in between the sofa cushions. I mean how could I not, right?
Look at that sweet face!

I am so in love! This is exactly what I want to do with our kitchen remodel. Can you tell me the demotions of her kitchen? We are doing an addition and moving the kitchen into that… just curious if her kitchen is the size of our new kitchen.
Hi Blair, I’m glad you like it. Unfortunately, I have no idea what the dimensions of her kitchen are and we are both on vacation right now.
