Black and White Fabric Painted Curtains
After adding the new faux cowhide rug to the dining room and with Christmas approaching, I decided it was time to change up the curtains too. The marbled-painted ones (HERE) reminded me too much of spring and summer. I was inspired by the shower curtains that I showed you in my bathroom post (HERE) and decided to go with black and white fabric painted curtains but more black than in the inspiration.
I have an entire hoarded stash of plain white Ikea Merete curtains in my attic. I bought them a long time ago when they were still cheaper than they are now.

I pretty much did the same thing as I did for my grey and white horizontal striped curtains (HERE to read more tutorial details).
I measured and taped off the outlines, mixed my paint, and started painting:
That’s it, so easy!
And they make such a difference don’t you think so? It was so hard to take photos that day though. The sun was blaring. Hope I have better luck when I show you my Christmas tour next week.
It’s all very bare right now because I was getting ready to decorate for Christmas.
You can barely tell in the photos but I also added the Ikea Liselott roller blind to our window. Unfortunately they discontinued other plain white roller shades and only have this patterned one now. I needed some shades because after 14.5 years of living here I was just sick and tired of not being able to close off the window to everyone. No privacy before!
The pattern of the Ikea Liselott roller blind is really pretty though and somewhat perfect for Christmas:
Are you as much into changing up curtains as I appear to be? I’m not sick and tired of my grey and white striped curtains yet though. They are so versatile and I’m able to change up my decor with them.
That’s it for today.

they look fabulous! i love this look for fall/winter! very modern and crisp and i am really impressed with how good the paint looks!
Thank Cassie, I was getting kind of sick of the colorful ones.
I love your bright and colorful home. The black and white curtains add an elegant touch and seem to fit right into the space playing nicely against the bright colors of your gallery wall. Great project.
Thank you so much!
I have always loved your sense of style…..these look stunning…..I love how you come up with such uniques ways to personalise your curtains.
Thank you so much for your sweet comment Gilly!
Your winter curtains are just perfect. I would have had a smeared up mess if I tried to paint some. I just love the way you have done up the entire house. If I was rich, I would pay you to do mine.
Thanks Sheryll. I call the my taxi do curtains.
You did an amazing job. I would be so nervous to tackle painting my own curtains.
Oh no, it’s not that bad, you should try it
WOW Julia. Those curtains ROCK!! I love how dramatic they are! That over-sized black border is so amazing. What a great back drop they are for your dining room. I love your new faux hide too. So pretty!
Thank you. The other curtains just didn’t look right with the hide
Wow! They look amazing. But… how do you keep your cats from destroying them? I have five cats and they seem to LOVE curtains. 🙂
Thanks Maria! Fortunately the cats aren’t interested in curtains at all! All 5 cats!
I love how they turned out!! So simple and beautiful!! Perfect for your dining room!
Thanks you Amber
I know you do and thanks!
Your new curtains came out just perfect! Love the nice wide border!!
Thank you Katrina!
Oh, look how clever you are…They turned out super cute!
Thanks so much Heather
WOW! Very stunning and quite chic! I LOVE them!!!
Thank you Kenz
Mmm – so bold and clean-lined! I love them Julia!!
Thanks Brynne
What a great idea, Julia! I know those will be stunning when you get your decor all together, can’t wait!! 🙂
Thanks Pam
Love the change! I’m a bit jealous that you have a stash in the attic! Do you mount anything over the roller blinds or just use them as is?
Right now I just have them like this with nothing mounted over them which is kind of bugging me. That might change though.
These turned out just lovely, and I’m so impressed that you’re changing out curtains seasonally….I still haven’t managed to get ONE set of curtains up in my dining room ;). And how adorable is that roller blind?!
Thanks Gretchen, I only change them out so often because I have a stash 😉
Lovely, and my favorite colors!! I once painted curtains and had a really rough time. I think frog tape would’ve worked a lot better than the tape I used!
Thanks Amy and yes the frog tape works great for painting curtains.
These are gorgeous! You could become a curtain designer! Oh wait, you sort of already are. I always love your work and these are no exception. I can’t wait to see your Christmas decorations.

Sorry I’m behind on reading, but glad I dropped in! These are AHMAZING!!!!
I love this Julia! I had no idea this would be so easy! I’m definitely going to try it next time I need a refresh!
Thanks and you totally should!
Wow!! Such impact! Looks amazing and so easy too!
Yes it was so easy. I’d love to have curtains like yours but then it’s no easy anymore 😉 and thanks.
