Better Homes and Gardens Christmas Ideas Home Tour
Today I’m finally sharing my photos of my feature in the Better Homes and Gardens Christmas Ideas feature. After the photography team left in January of this year, I took my own photos of course. It was so much work that I certainly wanted to keep the memories of such a special day for myself.
Seeing your home in a magazine will certainly never get old and I’m beyond thankful that Better Homes and Gardens gave me the opportunity to do it.
I know that some of you bought or received the special Christmas Ideas issue but for those of you like my family in Germany, who can’t get the magazine, this might be of interest. I also love documenting it for myself with this post.

The feature is still available at most places that sell magazines.
Last year’s Christmas decor was mostly blue but Better Homes and Gardens had requested pink/blush. So I had to redecorate for most of it after Christmas while keeping the key pieces intact.
In the published magazine you can see in some areas that they really cranked up the saturation and color, especially in the bedroom. The pillows look bright pink but are actually a pretty subtle pink which you can see in my tour today.
I had placed this colorful felt garland into the dining room tree and they also took it out. I kind of really liked it in the tree though.

I brought out my vintage German Rosenthal Björn Wiinblad Christmas plates and hung them over my blush buffet for their shoot. You just saw them in my tour last week in our living room (click HERE if you missed it).
You can also see that I placed the angel and miner in the photos again. I love creating new vignettes with the same meaningful items that we collected.
You can see my painting tutorial on the sideboard HERE. And you can find these vintage plates on Etsy. For example HERE, HERE, and HERE. I also wrote a post about my favorite German Christmas decorations which you can see HERE. (similar miner and angel HERE or HERE) | ombre tassel HERE
Here it is in the magazine:
The paper and ornaments are from last year’s Target collection but I think they have them again this year.

I love the combination of the patterns in the plates. Most of them were from HomeGoods. My favorite, the top patterned plate was originally from Wayfair though and is sold out. YOu’ve probably seen it in a lot of my photos. The silver wine goblets were a thrift shop find from last year.

Here is the shot that I felt was changed the most in the magazine. As you can see the pillows are definitely not bright pink. You can change a lot in photoshop. I personally like them so much better in blush the way you can see below.

The funny thing about the shoot was also that my husband worked nightshift and while they were shooting the downstairs, he was sleeping in the bedroom. The minute he got up at 3, he changed and we took photos by the fireplace of our family. He felt tired and awful and was complaining to me later how crappy he’ll probably look.
I think the photo turned out great.
Right after they left I ripped the crosses of the wall.

Before they arrived, we still had the room divider with garland behind the sofa table and they took it out which is the reason I ended up putting it into storage. It’s nice to be forced into a change sometimes that you thought you didn’t want. I kept it up for so long because I hid a vacuum cleaner behind it for easy access and cleaning. It definitely was very handy.
But I love the clean and open look. This year I hung the plates in that very same spot.
I’ve decorated this very same spot with the tree in so many different ways already. For the photoshoot I actually stuck real pine tree branches into the tree. The story behind that is funny though. Since the shoot was right after Christmas I had spotted my next door neighbor’s tree outside on the curb for the garbage. I had texted my neighbor that I was going to cut some branches out of the tree in case she saw me and was wondering what I was doing. Her husband didn’t know that and came home and was wondering what the heck I was doing with his old tree left for the garage. LOL!
And that will be a story forever edged into my mind when I see this little tree with the real branches stuck inside it.
We lost two of our old cats this year and white Lucy is still hanging in there but not doing good. I really don’t hope we will have to say that we lost three cats this year. I hope she’ll hang in there for a bit longer. We love her dearly.
You can see our poor Lilly cat lying on the ottoman below.
I love being reminded of how much our fireplace area has changed since then. It had bugged me for a while and while it was ok. I like it so much better the way it is now.
It doesn’t even really look like the same space anymore. (click HERE to see more of it)

I really love the blush that was chosen by Better Homes and Gardens and I am so glad I took my own photos so I could share them with you.
Tschüß,

You being in a well known magazine is well deserved!! Everything you do so is beautiful. I wish I could send you a plane ticket and have you re-do my living room! Haha. If you ever decide to work as a decorator for other people, please let me know. I look forward to Friday’s even more now..
Merry Christmas to you & your family! ????
What an awesome feature and so well deserved!! I wish you could come and style out my tables… I think you do that so beautifully!
Just gorgeous-as always!
Beautiful, Julia!
Wow! This is gorgeous. So beautiful – I love the soft colors you chose.
Beautiful tour! Saying prayers for Lucy that she may be a part of your family a little while longer.
I love hearing the behind-the-scenes details! The rooms all look amazing. Congratulations!
I hope Lilly hangs in there for you. <3
You really are very talented, Julia! Thank you so much for sharing all these beautiful photos. I also want to thank you for being so honest in your blog. It’s really easy for blog readers to begin to think of themselves as inferior because we can’t seem to have the life that we see on the computer screen (or tv, or magazines, etc). It’s somehow comforting to know that our favorite blogger has to contend with the very same things we do (like where to hide the vacuum!) and sorrow over our beloved pets, and living in a smaller house.
I do miss your gorgeous crystal chandelier, though. ???? It was what caught my eye and led me to reading your blog.
beautiful! It sounds like a lot of work, but it’s got to be so cool to see your house in a magazine. And I love the insider details about how they change the saturation in the photos and make things look different than in real life….and here I am spending all my Lightroom time trying to make things look the SAME as real life 🙂
This is amazing, Julia!! They were there in January for the Dec 2017 issue?? I had no idea it was planned a year in advance!
