Seeing my style and taste evolve over time
The other day I was thinking about how much I have evolved and my taste has changed when I saw pictures of what my son’s room looked like when he was a baby. This post is (almost) embarrassing for me and also bittersweet. I’m saying “almost embarrassing” because no matter what my skills or taste were, I poured my heart and soul into his room and all the rooms in our house. I used what resources and budget we had and that is really all that matters.
When I was pregnant with him 15.5 years ago my budget only included paint and some Ikea items. I love animals and wanted him to love animals too, I thought that painting animals on his wall was perfect. I sat in his room for days painting away. I had bought a crib quilt for him with animals on it and I based the murals on how those animals looked.
I think the photos below are the only two I actually have. I wish I had more.
When I look at the photos now, I have fond memories but I’m not sure why I loved the decor so much. What I do know is that he loved it when he was a toddler.

He then evolved to loving legos more and more mixed with some Mario brothers which resulted in me painting over the murals with the grey stripes. You guys remember them from his last room. I had chosen the grey stripes because it was a nice neutral backdrop to the colorful and busy legos he had.
I painted the above nightstand for him that I found on Craigslist and you can see the tutorial HERE.
Then he wanted me to remove the Mario Brothers decals and my photography improved a tad bit too.

And after that he just recently pleaded for me to help him clean out his room and store the legos in the attic so he could have a more grown up room which I shared last week and which you can see by clicking HERE if you missed it.

What has remained in his room over time is the antique bed. It truly grew with him which to me, shows that an antique withstands the test of time and goes with everything.
I don’t know if you are interested in seeing posts like this but for me and my family, especially my son, it is so fun to see how this same room has changed with him over time.
It’s odd to rethink the space and how you would have done things differently now. Do you ever think like that?
Tschüß,
my nursery was equally different from my current style…. thank goodness! and oh my gosh little tiny noa!!!!
How our tastes change. I feel like I was a child back then 😉
I love all of his rooms and your artistry is amazing. Love those murals. He is such a handsome young man and I love his new room too.
I look back and mine really is embarrassing. It was so country and tacky. Not at all what I like now. I even went through a danish modern phase. haha
Oh I love Danish modern. Do you have that phase on your blog?
All the room are wonderful! Each one reflects your incredible love and joy for your son! Your mural was absolutely enchanting – please keep sharing.
Thank you. I enjoyed painting it
Well I think the 1st room is adorable and perfect for a little boy. We didn’t always have to show the world “perfect spaces”. Keep up the great work.
You are right we don’t have to always show the perfect. And thanks so much
I think the toddler room was amazing! I wish I had your artistic skills.
Thanks Mary, my son read my post and told me that it was an awesome room and he loved it 🙂
I love this post girl!! Definitely interested in seeing more!!
I didn’t really take many photos of all the things I made back then. Not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing 😉
Of course I love seeing your styles change. Better than seeing how we’ve changed our hair styles????
LOL that’s true. Although I’d love to have my hair back from 20 years ago. I really do! Style and everything. It actually was soooo much better.
Aww–so sweet to see how the boy and the room have evolved! I remember putting so much thought and effort into Ari’s nursery (it had a vintage nursery rhyme theme), and I don’t think I have a single photo :(. I do have a video tour that I took before we moved out of that house….I need to figure out how to get it into a format we can watch!
Oh my gosh yes you do! I’d love to see that video
Each room was well done and changed as your son grew. I really like the “grown up” look you have now.
My style has changed so much too. I think it’s fun to look back. What’s funny and sad is I’m more critical of my house now than in the past! His room looks so great! I bet he loves it!!!
I love looking at how styles evolve. And I love his room – you can tell you put so much time and love into that space. Love that.
