  1. Love the little mock-ups. I agree, I really like it as-is. Still really crushing on those plates!! Can’t wait to see your basement (I’m way too scared to show mine!). =)

  2. Oh, I love your kitchen as is also. Sometimes more is just too much. Now if you want to see a terrible, awful, huge kitchen dilemma…..ask me about mine……… well trust me, you don’t.

  3. Sometimes we simply have to SEE it to know what works and what doesn’t!! I know that’s what I have to go through.
It looks great plain. It’s not a huge area and plain keeps it from getting too busy.
Have fun with the basement. In the 35 homes MC and I have lived in we have never had one!!!!

  4. vinyl, hey? Wouldn’t have guessed. I like it the way it is, so if you are digging the tile I say just stick with it. Hope you don’t have to spend too much time peeling vinyl!

  5. I like it how it is as well Julia, but I’m not gonna lie, I really really really like the marble subway tiles. I think if you ever do decide that tile is for you, you should definitely go with that. It really does look amazing in your kitchen. We don’t get basements here where I live so I’m excited to see yours even if it is scary!! Have a great weekend love:)

  6. There’s nothing wrong with leaving it as is…although I will say that I do really like the marble tile 🙂 I’m still holding out that you’ll do the marble backsplash sometime down the road.

I can see you using the geometric print on a piece of furniture! It looks so neat!

Most basements in general are dark and scary 🙁 I do laundry and as quick and possible, and usually take one of dogs with me for “protection” lol

    1. Yes geometric on a piece of furniture sounds like a plan.
Lol you take the dog with you. We used to run when we lived in our apartment at the funeral home. Yes we did live there.

I like it so much better “naked.” We don’t have a backsplash either, just a band of granite along the countertops. I also love that you didn’t do what everyone else does. That’s what makes you…you! I’m also a rebel. 😉

  8. Your kitchen has come a long way! It’s looks beautiful. I love the hex light above the sink! I think it’s fine to leave the backsplash area the way it is. If you find something later that you love, then you’ll be glad you didn’t compromise!

  9. You gave it a good try! When you think of the possibility that you could have gone with one of the tile options and not liked it, peeling vinyl doesn’t seem so bad! 🙂 Happy weekend!

  10. No backsplash is weird to me (just because in Spain, kitchens & bathrooms are tiled completely, from floor to ceiling, thought I’d prefer just the backsplash) but to each his own! It does looks nice as-is and if it works for you guys, that’s all that matters.

    1. I’m from Germany so I agree with you because they do the same thing there but I was never a huge fan of having everything tiled. In the bathroom YES but in the kitchen I like to paint 😉
Lets see maybe I’ll change my mind down the road.

  11. Hahaha you’re so funny! But it goes to show, not everyone needs the thing the other person has (ie, backsplash!). I’ve been wanting one too, but I rent, so there goes that.

You and I are definitely in the same boat! knocking out walls and picking back splashes. I like option #1 the best! But whatever you decide will be wonderful!

  13. Well at least you tried it! I think it is an awesome design too but I can see what you mean about it being like lace and making the space feel smaller. I think it looks great as is!!!

Hope you have a relaxing weekend and good luck peeling those stickers off!

  14. Sometimes a little trial and error is what you MUST do! It sounds like alot of work so it’s a bummer that it didn’t work out.

    Blessings,

  15. Your kitchen is just beautiful. I thought it looked really great with just the two rows of marble tile. That was my favorite of all the looks 🙂 I am also a little bit in love with your hexagon pendent. It’s really beautiful!!

Hi, passing through, checking you out and saw this post! Love what you did with the kitchen btw! My response: Darn, I was liking the first pic! And I like the marble squares. I have a similar dilemma going on in my kitchen. I need to pick a backsplash tile, which shouldn’t be a problem, but the counter granite is pretty busy, so I wanted a simple light subway tile. Turns out, my dear husband HATES subway tile (didn’t know this until THIS project, thanks alot!) Now I’m kinda lost. I think travertine is a little overdone (and kinda boring – Just MY opinion!) and neither of us really wants plain ceramic tile. Marble?? It’s a small area to be tiled, so maybe not ridiculously $, but again, I want simple! Argh!

You know what, looked at your as-it-is-now pic of the kitchen again, and I’m thinking (don’t know if it looks like this in person, or not) that since your cabinets are so high on the wall and the countertops are also white, that the gray wall WITHOUT the back splash looks the best! It seems the most balanced, from where I sit (ha!). I do like backsplashes myself for practical reasons, but as long as you like it the way it is, carry on! 🙂

  17. Tile is your friend. 😉

Your kitchen really does look great without a backsplash. Some can get away with it, some can’t. I think it’s one of those things you don’t want to rush. If we had rushed, I would have some weird mosaic stuff that totally isn’t our style. It will come to you.

  18. okay, I like it your vinyl wall but that’s me! 🙂 sorry you have to peel it off and it will take a while! but I must agree with you, I do prefer your kitchen without it, your kitchen without the backsplash looks great 🙂 I want to change mine now!
& can’t wait to see your basement (we had some water coming inside one our windows & we have no idea how to take care of it)

  19. Your kitchen looks great! I still love tile, but yours looks great without it too!

  20. I think with your kitchen layout, the painted backsplash looks the best. (Of course, I’m sure you could find some fabulous tile and do the whole wall, too.)

And I still think the stag on your fridge makes the room!

  21. The “before” was nice, but the “after” is even better, I have to say. This proves how a simple application of proper shades and tones can make a room look brighter and wider. The theme definitely makes for a good ambiance.

I am thinking about creating a back-splash that has some custom tiles. Using my silhouette cameo I’d cut a design to apply the the ceramic tile. Do you know if the vinyl will curl or be ruined if I apply to the tile before I grout and seal?

    1. Hi Lauree, I have it on my tile in the bathroom but did it after the tiling was done. I tried it on a couple before tiling and it just didn’t do well. So I most definitely don’t recommend doing it before grouting and sealing.
