DIY Goodwill Art
Sorry folks but I have another bathroom post for you today because I really wanted to have some art in the bathroom too. That actually also made me wonder if you’d rather have a makeover in real time progress or if you’d have the crazy all-done-makeovers that some other blogs do. It’s not realistic but I could try if you like that better, ya know!
So here it goes!
I always look for great frames and mats inside the frames for projects, so when I found the following piece at $9 at Goodwill I knew I had to buy it because of the unique round shape of the mat. Don’t get me wrong the artist did a great job too on the print….but It is so faded (can you see the once red cardinal?). It might be a relief to some of you that I didn’t throw it away. I just couldn’t throw someones art away. Yeah I’m a hoarder but it does pay off sometimes.
This is the back of the frame and all I had to do is lift the metal pins and take out the art and mat.
The frame was dark wood and I just spray painted it black.
For the art I was inspired by the handmade soap I ended up buying on Etsy. Boy does it smell good! Do you remember my post? (click HERE if you missed it and HERE for the soap). I even received another complementary soap with my order!
I didn’t want the art to look the same though, just similar.
For the art I bought a 49 cent white card board, took out my black acrylic paint and watered it down severely. I wish I would have still had my water colors but my daughter wasted them all.
I started with some brush strokes using different sized brushes as you can see in the following photos. The density of the paint was different in each stroke too.
I added more and more water.
Layered some more paint.
And the last step was to layer some more plain white acrylic paint on top.
When it was all dry I placed the mat on top of the painting to find a spot to cut out that I really liked.
And voila a $10 piece of art for our bathroom:

If you love the look but aren’t quite ready to tackle a small art project like this yet then check out these affordable options I found on Etsy which some are as low as $6 for downloadable files that you can print yourself. Just click on the side arrows (or click HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE). Or check out this post HERE for more colorful downloadable art.
And guess what? Thanks to your pep-talk I did drill the holes on the vanity too. Screw the warranty right? It looks so much better now. I’m glad I did it. As a reminder, these are the ring pulls I used as planned in my original moodboard (HERE).
{my Ikea Godmorgon vanity came with the white drain hole and popup drain}
I’m still thinking the mirror could be a little smaller. It’s actually the same width as the vanity but the photos give it the optical illusion of being bigger. I found the mirror at Goodwill but also found a similar one HERE. (click HERE for the faucet)
And as a reminder, do you guys remember what the before or in-between state of the bathroom looked like with all the builder grade basics?

with vinyl stickers, then click HERE to read about it.

I might try my hand at another piece of art. Lets see but for now I love it.

SO cool Julia!
You make it sound so easy! I would love to see the real time in-progress version of this remodel. Maybe then it wouldn’t be so intimidating to a novice like me.
Great score, I’m sure that round mat would be pricey! Thanks for showing us how you did the awesome DIY abstract, too!
That turned out so good! Nice!
Your talent always amazes me! Great job!
This looks amazing! I love the DIY art – you’ve inspired me to try some of my own.
I couldn’t find the link to the downloadable art on Etsy. Could you please provide that again? Thanks!

It was the right choice to add the ring pulls. The vanity looks great.
You’re amazing! This turned out so, so good!!!
The artwork is absolutely gorgeous! I love your fearless approach to art, every time I pick up a brush I fear mistake- but 40 cent tag board– who can go wrong?!
Love the entire bathroom and glad you took a risk and installed those perfect handles!
Thanks, the handles ended up being my favorite
