Freshly painted fireplace
Before Christmas I mentioned that the fireplace bugged me, can you remember? Is it bad? Nope! Is it me? Nope! But lately I have been just so blah. Why should I make myself so much work and replace the mantel when it’s not really bad and looking just fine? I feel like a really lazy blogger lately, too content to tackle any projects because there is so much other stuff going on. Well maybe when wrestling season is over I will snap out of this funk.
So on Friday I thought that I should just paint over the dark silver. It looked fine in the photos but actually wasn’t anymore, there were so many holes from nails and other marks. A freshly painted fireplace might just do the trick.
I also felt like playing musical rugs and pillows again and I like it a bit better now.
So I switched out the bedroom and fireplace rug. Last time I had this shag in the living room, my white cat Lucy didn’t like it there and peed on it twice. Nice right? She left it alone in the bedroom but not in the living room. Lets see if she approves this time. And I also switched out the two sunbursts.
Be prepared for lots of photos with different pillows 😉 and some fresh greenery.
And here is the white sun burst mirror:
Which throw pillows do you like best for that area?
Do you guys even remember what the fireplace looked like before? The dark silver?
Here it is in it’s darker version before:
I still would really really love for the mantel to be more chunky and modern and not the flimsy builder standard but with the little changes I made I think I can live with it a little longer. I actually have to live with it a little longer because while writing this post the doorbell rang and this little box arrived:
I have to snap out of the funk asap and put my thinking cap on. It’s hard to imagine anything passed the snow and ice outdoors right now. But the cats out of the bag now, I’ll be participating in my first Home Depot Style Challenge, the Patio Style Challenge it is.
Hold me, I’m scared. It’s due in March and there won’t be any leaves on the trees or even any green grass. What’s a girl to do?
That’s it for today.

I love how the fire place mantel turned out, my favorite pillow combination is with the two black and white pillows, last picture before the all blue.
I bet you will create something really wonderful for the Home Depot challenge. I can’t wait to see what you will come up with.
so excited to see your style challenge! and i love the rug in there- fingers crossed for its safety!!! and i love the gold mirror and leopard pillows!
Thanks, unfortunately I think the gold mirror is going back into the bedroom, because the white one is too big for above the bed. But it was fun to play around with the accessories.
ha–so funny that we’re both complaining about fireplaces today. Maybe we should trade–it can’t cost TOO much to ship a giant fireplace surround to you, right? ;). Congrats on the style challenge…can’t wait to see what you do!
I am having the same dilemma with my fireplace, so I was so glad to see your post. Love how yours turned out. Now maybe I wont be so intimidated to try the same thing. Can you please tell me what kind of paint you used and did you use a brush or a roller? Wish me luck! I love, love , love the beautiful contemporary picture! Did you do that yourself? I love to try to mimic this type of painting and would love to have this picture. I enjoy the Cuckoo very much and all your ideas. Much love , Vicki
Hi, I recently posted about all my paint colors here: https://cuckoo4design.com/2015/01/creating-colorful-home-neutral-walls-2.html and yes I used a paint roller. I painted the artwork about 2 years ago. Thanks so much for the compliments.
Wow! Congrats on the Style Challenge. Can’t wait to see what you do. Also, can I just say that I love the artwork styled on the floor. So chic!
I like your paint change, Julia, and your fireplace is styled so beautifully! Also really loving that color blocked artwork by your shelves. Lovely as always!
YES! We need to be thinking warmer weather. I can’t wait to see what you work up.I’m loving your beautiful space here and all the pretty pictures. My dog is the same way with a rug in our house. He has his own decor opinions. Lol.
LOVE the black and white pillows! This rooms is fabulous! Good luck with the Home Depot challenge! I know you will be AMAZING!! Looking forward to it!
Thank you Krystine. I’m scared 😉
I love the new look! The white mirror has a very fresh look though so the gold one back in the bedroom will be just fine . My favorite pillows are the black/white Greek key. Off the subject… Do you make your own pillows and if so where do you o get your fabric from? Love your posts, keep them coming and good luck with the design challenge, something tells me you will do a fantastic job 🙂
Thank you Michelle, I love the greek key pillows too. They pretty much go with anything. Sometimes I make my own but I mostly buy them. The greek key pillows were actually from Lowes and I got them for $2 each on clearance. And you can never beat H&M or Ikea pillows.
Oh, that rug looks so good and I love it in there! The new lighter paint color on the fireplace wall looks great too! I know you’ll come up with some fantastic ideas for the style challenge – I can’t wait to see!
I hope the snow melts on my patio or I will be styling a DIY igloo
thanks my friend
I love how the fireplace looks! I have to ask where is your piece of artwork from? It is amazing! Cannot wait to see what you do for the Style Challenge! We just painted our fireplace too (and all of the ugly wood trim and it is so much better already)! Still a lot of work to do but better…

Well thanks so much Annie, I painted the large piece myself.
Love!
Thank you!
So springy! I always love your mix of colors with gold and neutrals! You like a styling jedi or something. 🙂
You are too kind to me Amber 😉 Thank you
Well, I am sure you will do something spectacular for your patio for HD.
As for your room, mantle decor & pillows…… I liked it all. Although I do think the gold sunburst shows better……. but I like it all. You would faint away if you could see just one wall of my house right now. UGH is the only thing I can say.
And can someone please, please tell me how to make the print on here show up darker?
Thanks Sheryll. Can you increase the contrast and brightness on your computer?
How gorgeous!!! The styling, the colors, the mantel, and all!!! I’m especially in love with your shelving unit – such a chic etagere! Cheers, L
Thanks so much Loi!
Oh and would you still be interested in doing the pet series?!?! 🙂
Would love to!! Let me put together a post this weekend and email you next week. Thanks for the invite!
There is no rush either, I have a bunch of posts lined up. I can’t wait to read it.
Major fireplace envy. It looks so beautiful Julia. AND, I will never get over those shelves. They’re too amazing, and borderline insanity at $35 :O.
I’m also having patio envy too, haha! Can’t wait to see your style challenge!!
Thanks Amy. Lets hope the snow melts until the style challenge.
It’s amazing what a difference a little paint can make! Love how much lighter and brighter it looks! Can’t wait to see your patio challenge, I know it will be great regardless of the snow!
Thanks, I should have done this a lot sooner.
The update looks so fresh. I’m also a sucker for fresh flowers. Everything looks so elegant.
Thanks Kenz! I was so upset because all those fresh flowers died over the weekend LOL
Ahh I love the starburst and the rug there! Looks fab! But I’m a bit of a sucker for a good starburst mirror so I’m probably biased! I love swapping out accessories, it always makes me fall in love with a room again 🙂 And the new paint job looks fresh and lovely! Good luck with the challenge – I had to do a similar one in November for a DIY company here and everything was dead! LOL! I ended up just buying lots of potted plants, looked a bit more livelier! xxx
I’m with you, I don’t think I can ever grow tired of a starburst. I’ve loved them since I was a teenager.
And I think I will have to buy lots of potted plants too. Lets see!
I’m loving the lighter and brighter look! I’m excited to see what you get to do for the Home Depot challenge, too!
So excited to see your HD style challenge! I also like the gold mirror above the fireplace. 🙂
Can you please tell me where you got the rug? I know I’ve seen it around but of course can’t find it now that I’m actually shopping for a new rug! Thanks!
I got it on Overtock but I’ve also seen it at RugsUSA. Hope that helps.
Love your fireplace and all the pillows! So glad you are participating in the patio challenge! This should be fun!
Thanks Darnetha. It could be fun if the snow will disappear but we are getting 3-5 more inches today and I’m trying not to panic with the patio set arriving next week. I have no clue where to put it
Oh your fireplace looks so pretty and you have the mantel decorated beautifully!
Thank you Alicia
