Fireplace and man-cave update
How was your weekend? Mine was lazy and relaxing, just how I like it. The hubby got to do his annual motorcycle ride with his friends while I babysat some kiddos and we also had some dinner guests. So all in all a great weekend.
Today I want to show you a fireplace and man-cave update. It’s been bugging me for a while that it didn’t fit in with the rest of the changes I had made to the living room and the changes all started with the purchase of the two Threshold striped vases you can see in the photos below. I went to Target for something I had my eye on for a while but I’ll get to that at the bottom of the post. Of course I don’t just leave with what I came there for…nope when you go to Target, you come home with much more, especially when you notice stuff is on sale. It is always dangerous at Target, isn’t it?

Besides the new vases I didn’t really want to spend any additional money and besides the black candle sticks (click HERE) I didn’t have to. I’ve had this starburst over the fireplace before and all I did is switch places with the white one which is now hanging on my patio instead. Love the white one outside by the way.
The branches are from my clumping bamboo in the yard which is one of my favorite bushes we have.
I’ve wanted to take down the colorful painting I had for a while too and just replaced it with the one I had in the dining room. If you are new around here, it is an old Bombay Company print I’ve had for almost 18 years and I still kinda like it but my ultimate goal is to paint a new painting for this area soon. The artist has an Etsy shop with similar paintings which you can find HERE.
The ottoman was purchased at an estate auction a long time ago and I had reupholstered it in a grey West Elm fabric which has recently really started getting on my nerves so all I did was paint the fabric black. You can read in my painted curtain tutorials (HERE and HERE) how to do that. Super easy! And much easier than reupholstering the entire thing again. The throw is a Target table runner from last year which isn’t available anymore. I’m really happy with the changes for now since they fit in much better with the rest of the living room.
They really are pretty enough to stand alone though too should I run out of fresh greenery.
Man-cave update
See more of the basement HERE and HERE.
Above I mentioned that I originally went to Target for something else than the vases which was the below bar cart. I’ve had my eye on it for a very long time but just didn’t want to pay the price of $129, especially since I wanted two of them. When I first saw them at Target, I knew they’d be perfect as end tables in our basement. The new sectional (see HERE how I cut it in half to fit it into the basement) has very high arms and my husband already complained that he didn’t have end tables anymore. These carts have a removable tray which will really come in handy when I want to serve snacks or drinks during game time. And I love that I can quickly roll them out of the way. When my neighbor told me that they were finally 50% off at our local Target, I couldn’t get there fast enough! I was able to snatch two up and they didn’t last long in store. They aren’t 50% off online yet and I have no clue why they are so differently priced online, or why they get a bad review online. I think they are awesome, sturdy and stylish and get a good review from me.
I can’t wait to actually tackle the other side of our basement with a new layout of built in Ikea bookshelves and a large flat screen TV. That’s it for today. Tschüß,
(Youleeya)
The mantel looks perfect and I love those vases, how fun are they. I also really like the carts, I think they are so pretty and what a great idea to use as an end table.
I’m so excited that I still got my hands on those carts. The waiting paid off. Thanks Marty
i love the whole space- the black and white looks SOOO good in there and love the mirror on that mantle with the bamboo- perfect!
Thanks Cassie, I should have used the bamboo a long time ago. It stays green all year around 😉
The room is awesome! I especially love the mirror over the fireplace!
Thanks so much Patty
I love those vases! They are perfect up there. Also, I would have never thought to use the barcarts as side tables! So smart.
Thanks Ashley, I love that I can move them whenever I want to.
Lovely, like the symmetry of it, light, not fussy, love it
Thanks Melony
Everything you have done looks absolutely gorgeous! Thanks for sharing all the info with us.
Thanks Debbie!
I love the mantel update, you do symmetry so well Julia!
Thanks Vel, I love symmetry but had to throw in a little asymmetrical pieces too with the candles.
So funny, I have that same Bombay Co print and have had it for 19 years! Its really held up. Was in my dining room for the longest time, now its in my kitchen and looks better than ever with all my blue accents. Your room and fireplace look great!
I painted my matting and frame white though because it was so so dirty. It made a huge difference.
Oh this is beautiful, I love the mirror, too! Clean design, bright. Turend out great.
I love all those black and whites with the neutrals. It brings so much interest. Love the vases with the bamboo. It looks so inviting.
That bar cart is so awesome. I just narrowly escaped the enticing clutches of Target on a recent trip myself. Dangerous indeed 😀
that was a very productive target trip! love the vases and your carts–score!
Mmm! This is why I steer clear of Target – LOVE those vases and the carts as end tables!!! Loving all the black and white textures and patterns in your living room!
Loving the whole mix of black and white patterns in your living room! It’s looking gorgeous and so cosy. Great bargains at Target, I so wish we had them here but agree, it would probably be very dangerous for my wallet 😉 xx
I’m glad we have Target and although it truly is bad for the wallet
