Black and White Brass Parsons Chair Covers Makeover
Do you guys remember the 5 brass chairs I bought on Craigslist last year around this time? I’ve been wanting to give the fifth one a makeover for a while and actually started on it before Christmas but never finished it when my mom came. So last week I finally had the itch and a little time to finish my Parsons chair covers.
I also have been wanting to try out the wide-striped and plastic-coated Ikea SOFIA fabric. It sounds wonderful to be able to just wipe the fabric. Let’s see how it will wear over time.

The chairs have the original black ribbed fabric. Since these chairs are from the 80s it’s pretty old but still in ok shape.
I wanted a new chair for my small desk since my daughter now has the ghost chair in her room. She used to have the tulip chair but she kept swiveling with it and banging it into her desk which wasn’t a good solution at all. So that’s when I thought to start with, I’d give chair #5 a makeover with the above-mentioned Ikea fabric.
Taking the fabric off
The entire chair comes apart so easily. You just screwed the seat and back off.
Below you can see how the fabric was stapled on which came in handy because I knew how I’d have to put the new fabric back on.
TIP: Always take photos during the disassembly process to help you when you put it all back together later.
Time to remove some staples:
I had recently purchased a new tool to make removing all those staples easier and it sure paid off.
You can see exactly how to use it in the below photos. You won’t need a screwdriver and pliers anymore. One tool is enough.
Dirty and old fabric yuck!
When the fabric was all taken off, I laid the seat and pad on the back of the new fabric and cut them new pieces to size.
Then I stapled the new fabric to the seat and back the same way it was done before. You have to make sure that you fold the edges the same way it is pictured in the above photo.
The only difficult part was aligning the striped right and fitting everything on the thin edge of the seat and back. Can you see how thin it is? I use this electric stapler which works great.
And then you screw the seats back on. Done!!!
And I love it at my desk! It’s super comfortable too:
In case you missed my new pillow purchases you can find them HERE and HERE.

Thanks Marty
Oh my goodness that chair is just SEXY AF. Love it with the stripes playing off all your b&w! Gorgeous job getting all those lines so straight 😉
And the kitty toy is just behind the chair (is it a chick?!) lol
xxx
Haha thanks. And yes it used to be a chick. Not so much anymore.
you’re the upholstery queen! I wish I could just hire you to do all my work. these chairs look so good!
Thanks Brittany! I wish there’d plural chairs but I didn’t get more than one done yet 😉
Your chair is awesome! I really love it. I also love your sofa and loveseat. I am looking for new furniture myself. Would u mind telling me about them? I’d like to know the brand and where you purchased them if you don’t mind sharing.
Hi Helen, they don’t sell my sofa in the light colored leather anymore. Which is such a shame. But I linked to the same one at the bottom of my post in the ivory velvet which is super soft and nice too. I love my sofa and have had it for many many years already. Hope that helps a little.
Wowza, it’s like that chair was meant to be gold with the black and white stripes. Your style always has me swooning.
Thanks Trisha
I love how this turned out Julia! I’ve been eyeing that fabric and love how it goes with the brass. Great addition to your desk area!
Thank you Corey
Haha, yes! I spotted the toy! Took me a minute though 🙂 This looks great – I love the black and white stripe with the brass, great bold combo. I’ll be interested to hear about the wipeability of the fabric. I need to find a good wipeable fabric for when I do my kitchen bench this year!
I’ll certainly let you know how it holds up. It would look great on a kitchen bench
Julia, you never fail to impress with your creativity and color combinations. I love the mix of animal prints, black and white stripes along with gold and green accents. I am still pining for the large round mirror that you cleverly mix with your designs.
It looks great! I like the looks of that handy tool
It’s very handy 😉
I’m in love with this! The stripes make the brass that much better!
Thank you. I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of black and white stripes.
your new chair looks fantastic and tackling stripes plus lining them up so perfectly, talk about hard – and you knocked it out of the park!
Thanks Katrina. It was tricky and the reason I’m not going to redo the others any time soon 😉
That chair is so great, and I love the way that fabric looks in the room–perfect!
Thanks Gretchen
Your chair looks amazing! I really like the black and white stripes. So glad to have discovered your blog.
Thanks so much Alicia
Black+White stripes and brass… how could you lose? This is fantastic, Julia! Glad you had an extra chair to do something fun with!
Thanks Jennifer, I don’t think you can go wrong with brass and black and white stripes and I kinda knew you’d understand 😉
Wow! Love it so much! Awesome vision on this one. I would have never pulled the trigger on that fabric.
It’s not all that brave. The fabric is cheap 😉
Wow! Your home is so beautiful. I’m in love with everything.
I also keep my babies’ ashes on my desk – I don’t want to bury them. It’s been five years since I lost my Tigger, and three years since Winnie left and I miss them so much. 🙁
Thanks so much and I’m so sorry about your furry babies I miss mine so much too.
This is so gorgeous, Julia! I love that striped fabric! I’m going to have to think of a place to use it in my home!
Thanks Brynne, it’s awesome that it is wipeable
Ah so beautiful and BOLD!! That chair is gorgeous!! Such a beautiful simple shape then it hits you with the brass!
Thank you! Now I have 4 more of these chairs that I have no room for but totally want to hoard in my basement because I don’t want anyone else to have them. What’s wrong with me 😉 ?
the chair looks good, but the material looks cheap~~~
Such a pretty makeover!
