On My Mind Monday: Mixing gold and silver in a room.
How was your weekend? Mine was full of food! I’m still so stuffed. This is not the way I wanted to head to the beach in a couple of weeks, I tell you that much, ugh! When we are snuggly inside the house my hubby gets the baking itch and I of course love what he makes and then eat it. He made a delicious Cinnamon Apple Pie which we ate warm out of the oven with vanilla ice cream. Yum it doesn’t get any better than that. If you follow me on Instagram then you have seen a picture of it.
Back to my post title. You know by know that I’m on a huge gold kick lately, but that doesn’t mean that I want to get rid of all my silver either. Even when I was on the silver kick I didn’t get rid of all my gold.
Here are some examples:
I love our $25 thrift store coffee table that is chrome and brass:
I still love mixing metallics and I pretty much always have. Will there be more gold in my future? Absolutely! But some silver is here to stay as well.
I don’t want my huge gold crush to take away the love that I still have for silver. Mixing them is the way to go for me.
This made me think about how much is too much and is there a wrong or a right way of mixing gold and silver?

There is definitely the possibility of overdoing it with the metallic mix and it starting to look gaudy. I will be trying to walk that fine line for sure though because I love them both.
How about you? I know that a lot of you are with me when it comes to the gold obsession…so what are you going to do with your silver? Get rid of it all or still embrace some of it here and there?
Oh and I will finally have another dresser makeover for you on Wednesday!
So don’t forget to come back, ok?
Tschüß,
Thanks Kristin and well said. I think it looks more collected over time as well and I’m not the matchy-matchy kind either!
Those inspiration photos are just divine. Love them. I think you mix metals so well in your home. I for one, haven’t gotten the hang of it. Hmm, maybe in time?
Thanks Ashley!
I don’t think I ever would have looked at your rooms and picked out that the metals are mixed…what you see is just that room looks so “right!”
Aww 🙂 thanks so much!
i am all for mixing- i think it helps balance a room so it’s not too cold feeling. 🙂
I totally agree!
I think it blends together and gives the rooms a collected look which it better then the decorator matchy look. I have a mix of metals in my house and it works. I even have a few copper pieces thrown in. I think the key is to carry it thru out the space.
I love a collected look. I don’t have copper yet but if I find a pretty piece at a thrift store one of these days, I will add it for sure 😉
I say mix away! I think I read somewhere that metallics are considered neutrals, so they can always be mixed (like black, white & tan). I was busy with gold gilding last night…I have such a soft spot for it. have you tried that benjamin moore metallic gold paint? I really want to try it, so I think I need a new gold project.
Yup they are considered neutrals 😉 and no I haven’t tried that paint. I don’t have a Benjamin Moore close to my house, so I never use the paint.
I think you need a new gold project too! LOL
I love to mix metallics in spaces. I really think things can look a little flat if there’s all of one type in a room. My wife hates gold and brass and I love it so I have to be strategic about using it in small accents throughout our home. I’m hot a huge fan of chrome and steel and she is so for us it’s all about balance. I love how you’ve mixed them throughout your home, it’s just beautiful.
Maybe she’ll get on board with the gold soon. Some people need a while! And you need to come up with a plan to convince her to like neon pink too! LOL
Seriously gold and neon pink!!! It’s the bomb!
Good luck trying to convince her!
Your living room looks beautiful Julia, I can see the mix of metallics because you mentioned them, if you wouldn’t have mentioned them, I wouldn’t have noticed because they blend in very well! 🙂 I love how you have style your living room :-)I’ve mixed metallic in our master bedroom with silver lamps and only now I have added gold accessories but still kept my silver lamps, I even added mint decorative boxes; it looks pretty! But, don’t know why I have difficulties mixing them! & don’t know why I’m into wood too lately! 😉
I’ve been mixing for years! It has worked great with my blacks, whites, and mirrors! Adds something? I guess the pros would have a good word! Maybe balance?
Always been a fan of mixing metals, I’m not for the matchy either. I’m a big proponent of ‘buy what you love and it will work.’ Love your coffee table, what a score!
What a great post! I don’t think people don’t realize you can mix metals. I get that question all the time. I like to think of if you are wearing jewelry. A lot of jewelry has the mix of both metals and people don’t even notice it. But when it comes to their homes they think it as a big no no. You gave great examples here, and your home is the perfect example of how the two can co-exist cohesively.
Okay so I too am all for mixing the metals seeing as was stated earlier, they’re all neutral……. that being said, I was so wondering where you got your coffee table!! I love it!!! Your home is so inspirational and beautiful.
I say mix away!! I love those inspirations pictures and I think you’ve done a great job of seamless mixing gold/silver/brass/chrome together.
I love the mix of the two. I think it looks more eclectic. Your husband is always baking up some good stuff! Jealous!
This could quite possibly be my favorite designing trend/trick/rule right now. I love how it looks when metals are mixed…gives so much more layer to a room. It’s funny how many people feel like everything has to match and then I show them pictures of rooms with a collection of metals and it totally liberates them! 😉 I have been looking at black, white and brass kitchens lately and I love when they have the stainless steel appliances! I think it looks great!!! And of course, your house is seriously amazing…you make it look so effortless! 😉 Jesse @ Scout & Nimble
I agree, silver and gold are meant to be together. Which is great because so many people have both and they end up throwing out one or the other when they redecorate. I wish my house looked as clutter free and put together everyday as yours does! Sometimes I feel like I live in a disaster area!!!
I love the mix too! It’s funny, when I was a kid I used to hate it. I just thought they didn’t “go” together. I also used to be much more “matchy matchy” in my aesthetic, but have loosened up quite a bit. I’m not really sure if there’s a right or wrong way. My first thought was it helps to evenly distribute color in a space: a little gold on one side of the room should be balanced with a little on the other. But people break them successfully all the time so who knows?! I know when I love a space though and I think some people just have a knack for creating them whether they follow rules or not. You included!
I love mixing it too! I still have a lot of silver that I’ve left as is because I like the way it looks to have a little of both. Love those inspiration rooms too!
I personally love the mix of gold and silver. (There are too many beautiful things out there to limit yourself to just one metal.)
