I mention affordable in the headline of my post and I know that isn’t the case for everyone but for this post I know that I didn’t pick the most expensive. I chose the ones that are attainable for our household.
And no I’m not going to push Amazon Alexa on you because despite how much people love it, I would feel like I have an electronic spy in my home and as of now I just don’t want it even if it does amazing things and helps me out. That’s just my personal feeling about it. Who’s with me?
I’m also really loving the Apple Homekit app and being able to control all the devices through that cool app but some of them don’t work with it and might have to be operated through another app from your phone.
My Favorite Affordable Smart Home Devices
So today I want to talk about my favorite smart home devices. What we have and what I’m planning on getting yet.
ecobee3 lite thermostat
Our old programmable thermostat drove us nuts and it is now so nice to have a new one that you can control from your phone.
There are several different ecobee devices but I chose the cheapest one. I’m a person where there is such a thing as too many features and this one has just what I needed. I like being able to program it from my computer or phone, it tells me the weather and I can adjust it from bed while using my phone.
You see one of the biggest things my husband and I fight about is the air conditioning in the summer. He’s always telling me that I want it too cold. He’s a really good sleeper and once he’s asleep he’ll stay asleep and I can now adjust it to my comfort level from bed once I hear him snore. Seriously! I won’t have to get up anymore to lower the temperature. It’s huge for me.
It’s also so so much easier to tweak my daily temperature schedule for heating and cooling.
Plus the set up was super easy and their video tutorial didn’t leave me questioning anything.
We love it!
Iris Smart Water Sensor

This is where my disaster story for this week comes into place and if you follow me on instagram then you know about it already. Our basement flooded AGAIN.
I was doing my daily work on the computer when Willy the kitten jumped on my lap and I wondered why he was all wet. So I started to explore and was horrified when I noticed that the entire basement laundry room was flooded and the rest of the basement started filling up fast. The water had reached our nice fluffy rug and was approaching the sofa.
Our sump pump float was stuck and didn’t set off the trigger to run the pump.
I was in a frenzy and cleaned the basement like a maniac. Thank gosh we have a nice neighbor who works from home and was able to help me. Also my husband was able to leave work to help.
Then I started thinking about a water/leak detector. What if I would place a leak detector by the pump that alerts me on the phone when the water is overflowing from the hole? I mean how could that not be a great thing?
Remember this is all followed by our sink leak in the kitchen and now having to replace the entire downstairs floor.
I searched for affordable devices and have the Iris Smart Water Sensor on my list of things to purchase next. I wish it would be here already with the big storm on the horizon today.
Another one I was looking at is the Delta WiFi Leak Detector (click HERE). You guys know that I’m a big fan of Delta products which we have throughout our home. So I’m not exactly sure yet about which one I will chose.
The Schlage Sense™ Smart Deadbolt
Like I mentioned last week (click HERE), this lock is changing everything for us and we truly love it. I wish there would be smart locks for our sliding glass door but I haven’t found one yet. If you missed why I love it so much you should read my post.
Sylvania Smart and Bluetooth Dimmable Bulb
Smart dimmable light bulbs! Do I need to say more? It drives me crazy when I’m pulling out of our driveway only to notice that my family left their lights on in their rooms. How nice would it be to control those from your phone?!?!
Koogeek Smart Plug, WiFi Socket Outlet
I purchased this plug that I can control from my phone. I can use it for lamps which is what I’m doing right now or I can use it for many different gadgets. The possibilities are endless.
First Alert Onelink Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector
I want to be notified on my phone if there is an issue with carbon monoxide or a fire. It sure would make me feel a lot safer. Don’t you agree?
Logitech Circle 2 Indoor/Outdoor Weatherproof Wired Home Security Camera
I have a camera right now monitoring my cat enclosure. I’m always afraid that vandals would do something to it or my cats. It’s a tad bit of a hassle to use and I sure would love to have an outdoor camera that is usable with my phone. This is another item on the top of my list.
iRobot Roomba 690 Robot
This one has been on my Christmas list for years. The robot vacuum cleaners are just so expensive! I sure want one and I picked one of the more affordable ones. I will keep asking for it but I know it’s the one I can live without the most out of all the above items.
It really would be so nice to watch a robot vacuum my house and cat hair.
So which item would you really love to have?
I know for sure that the next purchase is the water detector for us.
Wish us luck that the horrible approaching rain on the west coast isn’t another basement disaster for us.
