Stylish boho DIY tassel ottoman made with mop heads
When I shared in last Friday’s post about my favorite living room poufs that I bought another ottoman/pouf, everyone was wrong about which one I got. The one I bought fits right in with my current home decor and I wanted to add some additional details to it. That is why I came up with the idea to turn it into a unique tassel ottoman with my favorite material to use… a dollar store mop head. Let me show you what I did!

You might wonder why I bought another pouf. Well, we use the one that I recently re-stuffed all the time. I also have a how to stuff a pouf blog post in case you need to do the same.
I wanted another ottoman for the fireplace area for extra seating or footrest. This time I wanted one that’s not stuffed with the beans because they get so easily smushed and you have to re-stuff them again. This one is a big solid pouf, I don’t see it getting worn down anytime soon. I really love the quality.
Materials used
- upholstery thread
- curved upholstery needles
- mop head
- strips of old jeans
- aluminum foil and jeans pouf
Tassel ottoman instructions
I still had a mop head left from previous projects and the wool matched perfectly with the wool used to weave together the jeans strips of the ottoman.
I opened up the top of the mop where the thread holds it all together and separated the strands into 4 even amounts:
Then I folded each pile in half and knotted them together with a string:
I had some fringed strips of jeans left from my previous projects which I used to tie the tassel heads.
Tassel making tip
Before I tied the tassel heads, I crumbled up a little aluminum foil ball for the inside of the tassel heads as you can see in the below photo. This helps to make the tassel heads look bigger and fuller. You can also use styrofoam balls the way I sued them in my macrame long narrow wall art.
And of course, Maya had to run with some of the jeans strips.
Here you can see how the head looks with the aluminum foil hidden inside of it and the jeans strip tightly wrapped around it.
I used an upholstery needle and thread to sew the strip close at the top of the tassel and to attach the tassels to the corners of the ottoman.
If you want to, you can open the strands of the wool yet to make the tassels bigger. So far I have only done it to one of the tassels and still have to do the rest.
It’s the same process I used to make the mop head and yarn wall hanging.

this is AMAZING! i love how it looks with those long tassels!
Like little mops LOL
Looks amazing and goes perfectly with the jean pillow (that I’m still crushing over)
Gimme all the jeans and tassels
love the tassels (although I can see how they turn it into a giant kitten toy ;))…and that’s a great price for a such a solid, well-made looking pouf!
It is the sturdiest one I’ve ever touched. The kids can totally flopped themselves on it and it doesn’t budge
Love the poof with the tassels! Your creativity and talent continue to amaze me!
