  1. Beautiful! What a great idea for that tree, would work perfectly for my daughter who just started crawling and I’m sure will want to pull down the whole tree this year 🙂 And that light fixture, how clever! Everything looks great!

      1. Hi,
Such great ideas! I have two of these IKEA canvases, and would like to put lights onto one of them. I wasn’t sure what you meant about the 14” grommets – how would these be installed?? Thanks for any help!

        1. Glad you like it. I would punch the small grommets into the fabric where I want the lights to be and then just push the light bulbs through the grommets from the back so you can hide the cable from the back if you use a standard Christmas light strand. Or you could skip that and just use lightweight fairy lights.

  2. i LOVE this, julia! what a great idea! especially for apartment dwellers or people who don’t have the room for a tree. how cool- the light is awesome, too!

  3. first of all, that chandelier is like those bubble ones i’ve been coveting…and this is just with ornaments? crazy! and i LOVE how dimensional you made that tree fabric. another super good idea!

  4. OMG! I love this idea! I so want to do this now. You never cease to amaze.

Amazing! Simply amazing. What a great idea for people who don’t have room for a full tree! Oh and your chandelier is great too! 🙂

    1. Thanks Caitlin. I certainly have room for a tree. I think I have 5 or 6 every year, lol, plus this canvas tree now. I know, I overdo Christmas.

  6. WOW!!!! I love the canvas tree…just what I need…no stringing lights! 🙂

  7. It’s 5:47am and I’m on the treadmill worrying how and when I can get to ikea today to get the fabric because I LOVE your project! Thank you for sharing!!!!

  9. GORGEOUS, Julia! What a cute idea! The canvas tree by itself if fabulous but adding ornaments is awesome! I love it! Your chandelier is soooo pretty too! Beautiful job! Thank you so much for sharing! I’m going to include this in this week’s highlights. 😉

  10. Very nice, but i have a question. Maybe i’m just a little confused. 6 screws for 4 connections?

    1. OMG, lol…you are right! I meant to say 8! I’ll change it. All these people and nobody caught the mistake.
      Thanks 😉

    2. No problem. Will definetely try tu build this beautiful piece!

You are so clever! I can’t believe that I walked right past this fabric last week at Ikea! Boo hoo, me. I can now officially claim how ripped off we Aussies are, by comparison, by Ikea! Holey Moley…one metre here sets us back by AU$9.99, whereas it only costs you guys US$13.99 for TWO yards!!! And the friggin’ stuff comes from Indonesia – just around the corner. No wonder the fight for Aussie justice with Ikea goes on. I guess it’s down to population numbers to keep the costs down. (Place another boo hoo here!) Anyhoo, I totally heart what you’ve done with that fabric and I’m going to be making another trip back there just to get some! 😉 Thanks heaps for your uber cool tutorial. Btw, your Xmas tree is perfectly imperfect, just the way it is, and I HEART it. mwah Hx

    1. Thanks so much!
I can’t believe how expensive it is! Somebody from Perth, Australia just wrote me an email desperately looking for this fabric. She wanted me to list it on ebay so she could buy it. The shipping for that isn’t really affordable either.

  12. aussiebeachgirl says:

Oh wow! How dreadful for her. Ikea, here in Brisbane (Queensland), stocks it so if she wants to contact me, by all means pass on my email to her. I’ll see what I can do for her. It’s cheers, heather 🙂

You’re very welcome, J! I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything as beautiful as your light feature…it has the WOW factor a gazillion times over! Hx

    1. Thanks, the chandelier is from Germany but you can get it in the US too just not for THAT cheap!

    2. Where can I get it? Could you give me more informations? It would look just perfect in my dining room!
I love your website! You are so gifted!!! Thank you for sharing your great ideas!

    3. Thank you so much! Happy Holidays to you and your family!

      1. Hi Julia, I’ve just ordered the fabric from eBay ($60!), and am wondering about the frame. Did you fine the frame is stable enough, or would you add an additional cross-bar? Also, how did you hang it? Attach wire across or some other way. I love the tree, but my skill is limited (I wish I had great tools and know-how!). Thank you!

        1. Mine was fine without the cross-bar but would certainly have made it more stable and I used two nails on the top where the top of the frame could rest on to hang the canvas.

  13. Simply amazing, an excellent idea and beautifully done. Would you mind if I re blogged this post on my design blogsspot

  14. Love yours! It is so classy! I did something similar, but used a curtain rod and felt decorations. Thanks so much for showing us how you did it. Love your chandelier too.

Love the tree so much I got one. Two Questions: (1) Are you going to leave it up all year, or dismantle it, or what?

    (2) Are you going to add more bling to it, since only the top 1/2 is decorated?

    Thanks!

    1. I took it down after Christmas and will put it back up next year.
And it’s only half decorated in the one photo. In the rest of the photos it is completely done. Next year I might add something else.

OK, I was able to nab one of 3 remaining Ikea Christmas trees from Amazon a couple weeks ago. It was pricey, at $25, but free shipping and I don’t have to obsess about it for the next year. Now I have to figure out what to do with it!

Am thinking of sewing on random antique various colored buttons on it.

Couple questions: (1) Have you washed yours at all? My friend said if I wash it, it’ll lose its sheen & also it’ll fray at the edges. (2) Did you remove your furring strips so you can just store it for the year?

    Thankee!

    1. Hi, I have washed cut fabric from Ikea before and it worked just fine. The edges didn’t fray a lot.
And yes, I did take the picture apart so I could store it.
The idea with the antique buttons sounds great.

Thanks….I find myself coming back most every day to visit your brilliant site.

Love your striped curtains, too. Oh, and your dining room chandelier. Will let you know how my project comes along.

I have to post as anonymous as I don’t know how to create an account. I live at Lake Tahoe, NV.

    3. Aww thanks for liking my blog 🙂
You just have to get a free google account and you can get a message with your name and picture if you want to.

  17. Hello there, found your site, somehow, but LOVE this. I live in the Netherlands now so I seriously begged my mom who lives in the states to ebay and send me this fabric asap. I now have it and am so excited to make this but I want to add the lights as you suggested. I can’t seem to find a single example of how to do it online. Do you have any suggestions for adding the grommets and lights as I really don’t want to ruin my treasured fabric. haha. Thank you!

    1. Hi Sarah, nice to meet you. They don’t sell this fabric at Ikea in Europe? I’m so surprised! I bought some grommets last week and will play around with it. The trick is to finding the right size. If I figure it out I will post it.
You can already put it on a frame though and I would definitely put some liner (something thicker like felt) stretched under the fabric to avoid it from being see through.
      Hope that helps.

    2. They have a new style this Christmas which has a weird white wash over it, almost like the photo was over exposed. Just doesn’t look as good in my opinion.

So happy that you are trying first. Please do let me know if you figure out sizes. And if at all possible can you tell in metric units as well, you know living in Europe and all (but I am sure as you are from Germany you understand ;)) Also will look for a cheap fabric to line it with, good idea!

I believe the one they’ve produced this year will glow in the dark. That’s what the weird finish is, which I definitely wouldn’t wash.
I bought three of the regular one on eBay: one for me, my sister & sister-in-law. I’m hesitant to wash it before sew or staple it.

  18. This year, they carry a similar fabric with name “Vinter” in the Maryland US Ikea store for $4.99 per yard (you do have to buy 2 yards). I just picked it up this weekend and am so excited to try this beautiful project in 2014!

  19. Seriously…does any one have one of these tree fabrics to sell??? Would love to buy it…

    1. You can sometimes find it on ebay. Unfortunately I don’t have any to sell. I did buy some extra and sold it on ebay but it’s all gone. Sorry
