Since spending so much time this year making accessories with macrame yarn, I of course have to make macrame ornaments as well. Last week I re-shared the macrame half-moon tassel embellishments I made over the summer but this time used as a Christmas tree ornament hanging in my small boho Christmas tree. So today I want to show you how to make Christmas ornaments with macrame yarn that are super easy to make.

Some of the other macrame tutorials I have made can be easily repurposed as macrame Christmas ornaments. I’ll get more into details about that below too but the DIY beginner macrame garland and macrame wreath tutorial can be used to make small ornaments.
My macrame feather can be hung into a Christmas tree as is and my macrame earrings can be replaced with a wooden ring instead of the hoop earring and hung into a tree as well.

Instructions on how to make Christmas ornaments with macrame yarn

Below is a video tutorial. Click the triangle on the image to watch and if you are on a phone or tablet hold it sideways for better viewing.

Start by cutting your yarn. I used 5 pieces of macrame yarn cut at 20 inches long and one small 6-inch piece for a short piece to hang the macrame ornament.

  • looped piece of yarn on wooden ring to hang macrame ornaments
small 6-inch piece knotted, tied, and looped onto the wooden ring
  • loop 4 pieces folded in half on the wooden ring with Lark's Head knots
loop 4 20-inch pieces onto the ring with Lark’s Head knots
  • finished Lark's Head knots on wooden ring
all 4 strings looped on the ring
  • beginning of horizontal Half Hitch knots
use the 5th string to loop horizontal Half Hitch knots on it
  • two loops to create horizontal Half Hitch knot
Half Hitch knots have two loops
  • half hitch knot pulled tight
    pull tight
  • second half hitch knot
continue all the way to the other side of the piece
  • finished half hitch knots and unraveling the fringe
unravel the yarn to create fringe
  • comb the fringe
    comb the yarn
  • trim the fringe with sharp scissors
    trim the fringe
  1. Fold the 6-inch piece in half, knot it at the ends and loop it over a wooden ring with a Lark’s Head knot as pictured below.
  2. Then grab your 5 pieces of macrame yarn and put one to the side for later. Fold 4 pieces in half and also loop the on the wooden ring with Lark’s Head knots.
  3. Grab your 5th piece of macrame yarn and lip the yarn from the wooden ring around the 5th piece with horizontal Half Hitch knots as pictured. Usually, when making macrame you don’t add a new piece of yarn but use the outside string on each side. For this one, I wanted extra string though which is why I added an extra piece.
  4. Continue the Half Hitch knots to the other side of the little macrame hanging.
  5. Then all you have to do is unravel the yarn, comb everything, and trim the ends evenly. This is where you could use the fabric stiffener to stiffen the fringe but this time I didn’t do that.

And voila you are done.

My other macrame tutorials used as Christmas ornaments

macrame garland turned macrame Christmas ornament

The below macrame ornament is done according to my beginner macrame garland tutorial. The difference is that I only used one section minus the wooden beads on each side.

And I used free sticks from outside instead of knotting onto a piece of yarn as I did with the garland.

Above you can see the sections I was talking about on the macrame garland.

Can you believe that Free People sell the exact same little ornament HERE for $32!?!? That’s crazy, right? The only difference to theirs is that they left the strings longer and didn’t unravel and comb the yarn as I did.

Can you believe that this little macrame star Christmas ornament is the same thing as my macrame wreath? The only differences are that I didn’t add the thick wool, used 3 mm yarn (so it would fit on the wooden ring), and stiffened and shaped the fringe to a star. Other than that it is the exact same thing on a smaller scale.

Below is a photo to refresh your memory. I should also mention that I made only 5 points to the star as well with 20 20-inch pieces of yarn. And obviously only one row of points.

Look below, doesn’t the macrame snowflake look cute hanging on my desk?

half-moon tassel embellishments as Christmas ornaments

Like I mentioned above I shared my small tree with you last week where I added the half-moon tassel embellishments that I made over the summer as macrame Christmas ornaments.

Different use for these mini macrame hangings

These types of tiny macrame hangings make great party favors or hostess gifts as well. Just look how cute they look around the neck of a bottle of wine.

Or you can hang them as a purse charm on your favorite bag.

As usual, if you don’t feel like making macrame ornaments yourself then you can purchase them handmade on Etsy. Let me show you some:

That’s it for today. I hope you’ll give these a try and have fun crafting over the holidays the way I do. It’s so comforting to me.

Happy Holidays und tschüß,

Yikes! Did you see the Free People macrame Christmas tree for $150? That might be on my list of things to dupe!! I made your star ornament out of my scrapes. Next one I’ll try the double knots and or rows you also show.

No, I didn’t see it. Going to check it out now. Glad you were able to make the star. It’s my favorite!

I believe they are 2-inch rings. I linked to the exact ones I bought in the post. Good luck!

What size macrame yarn are you using for the ring ornaments? I have 5mm yarn, I think, and 2 inch rings. But the yarn seems quite large for the rings. They don’t look quite the same. I’m wondering if you use 3mm or 4mm yarn to make them with?

Yes that’s a bit large, I used some 4mm and 3mm scraps I had left and linked to the yarn that I used.
