Sorry for the radio silence over here. I’ve been away and struggling with some other things that need to get done around here and that I don’t want to do. But for today I’ll spare you the soapbox again ok? I’ll save that for another time because you’ve been hearing too much of that lately.
On the other hand I could complain about our leaks we had in the kitchen and basement again which upped my work load tremendously. Like hmmmm having to replace our laminate flooring.
And to prevent any water leaks from happening again, my friends at Delta Faucet sent me a box of three leak detectors. I can’t even tell you how relieved I am to have these little water leak finders (HERE). You guys know I’ve been on a mission to make our house smarter and this is another example.
The easy way to detecting a water leak
Today I want to tell you a little bit more about the leaks we had already and how they could have been prevented the easy way. I want to tell you why I love these leak locators and why I think they are life changing. They one hundred precent make me sleep better at night.
Why I think everyone needs a water leak detector
Lets rewind to the day I sat at my computer writing a blog post one January winter morning this year when suddenly a very wet cat jumped into my lap. Can you imagine the confused look on my face? “Willy why are you wet?”…”How are you wet?”…”Don’t you hate getting wet?”… It was a very confused slow process until I jumped up because I realized that there was only one way he could be wet! There is a darn leak in the house and looking at our home’s history the normal conclusion for me to draw was the basement. So I ran down only to confirm my fears. There was almost an inch of water covering our entire basement and laundry room floor. I ran to get rubber boots and went to investigate after I had determined I wasn’t getting fried to death by an electrical situation. I found out our float on our sump pump was stuck.
It wasn’t a storm situation everyone always pictures where the power goes out and as a result the pump doesn’t work and we rush to hook it up to a generator. We are on high alert during those situations and we know our pump won’t work! It was just a good old damp and cold January day with the regular bad snow and rain mixed weather we have around here.
So my new imaginary scenario of that situation is this:
One cold and damp January winter morning I was working on my computer when my cat jumps on my lap as my cell phone goes off with an alarm to alert me to a leak. And hey my phone also tells me exactly where it is!
I go to investigate and fix the pump before the water spreads. The end! This sounds so much better doesn’t it?
And we are no strangers to other leaks in the house. Like I mentioned our sink leaked over night and now we have to replace our laminate. So in our house one of these smart little water leak finders will go under our sink in the kitchen. It’s such a tough area to find a leak immediately since not everyone opens the cabinet door all the time.
We’ve had kids stuffing too much paper and other items in the toilet which made it overflow only for the water to end up dripping on our head while sitting with our friends at the bar in the adult basement area. Wouldn’t it have been nicer to have an alert on my phone that some fluid (yuck) is dripping out of the toilet bowl before it went through the ceiling? Yeah it sure would have been a much better situation for us.
Below is my former furry leak detector with big eyes when he heard the detector beep. “Mom did that thing just make a noise when it got wet?”
Willy is very intrigued even though he’s spooked out by this beeping and blinking thing.
I mean this could be a possible cat pee detector too, right? I’ve had my thoughts about this. I don’t have a need for that situation right now but in the past we had some furry kiddos who had certain spots they shouldn’t have used on our laminate and those areas bubbled up. This would have made clean up so much faster, easier and the floor wouldn’t have gotten damaged.
The text tells you exactly where the leak is. All you do is investigate and acknowledge the leak in the Delta app.
Another example scenario: My neighbor’s across the street went away on vacation only to find out when they got home that their toilet pipe on the third floor had burst and ran the entire couple of days they were gone. They had to move out of their home for several weeks until everything was fixed again.
There are so many scenarios for our messy family lives that I can imagine and they even go past the regular shower, toilet and sump pump story.
All you have to do is add the phone numbers you want added to the alerts in the Delta app (HERE). I have my entire family’s phones added to the alerts and when we go away, I will add my pet/house sitter and neighbor’s to the alerts.
My biggest relief will be the fact that whenever this sump pump hole overflows again, I will know it immediately. And this water leak alarm still beeps even if your wifi isn’t working since it has batteries. Should the battery levels run low.
Temperature sensors are also included with these water leak detectors which is important for cold homes and areas where pipes can freeze and burst.
At the end, it costs a lot more in nerves and money to get everything fixed than having to spend money on these little water leak alarms.
Thank you so much Delta Faucet for easing our minds. We are grateful to have them because we know that next leak is inevitable. It happens to all of us.
Do you have a flooding or leak story that I didn’t think of and where this could have changed everything for you?
