Painted Deer Bust
How was your weekend? Mine was fabulous!
We watched our kids play soccer in beautiful weather, went to the Renaissance Faire (you know that already if you saw my picture on facebook) and my DIY ceiling fixture got featured by Centsational Girl’s “Best of the Blogosphere“. Anyway…yall know how much I love deer heads. And definitely not in the “hunting” kind of way. I prefer them alive and beautiful!
I’ve had my white cardboard safari deer head for about 5 years and I still love it. I know, I went a little over-board with the deer stuff in Germany (deer-head rain boots, deer-head shirt, deer-head pillow, antler from my childhood play house), so when I discovered a deer-head bust at HomeGoods the other day I couldn’t resist. I really couldn’t! I know there is such a thing as too much of one thing, but please forgive me! It was only $12!
The shiny fake copper finish wasn’t doing it for me…but I still had to have it.
So again, I just spray painted it. First I wanted to go for a fun color like the re-purposed toy bookends you can see on Pinterest…
But I just ended up with the good old glossy white….and I love it! But I’ll let you know when I’ll change the color and I’ pretty sure that I will. Either turquoise, pink or yellow! Lets see!

Hi and thank you! You are right! I’ve said it many times on here, that I need to show more pictures and step-by-step instructions. I’m just so used to just grabbing a can of paint and getting it done.
This was so easy I didn’t even think about it. Just cleaned the bust, taped the base, spray primed and then spray painted it white.
I’ll try my best to change my ways!

Okay…my latest obsession is spray chalkboard paint. I’ve painted pottery piggy banks, a wreath holder, glass in a frame (for a chalkboard). It’s pretty cheap at Wal-Mart otherwise I use a super matte black. About 5 years ago I used this spray by Rustoleum called “camoflage” that had almost the same effect. I rarely use primer when I spray since it seems to make the over-coat run (for me, anyway). Oh, I also found another cuckoo clock to spray…think I’ll try a super bright color this time. Cheers!
Interesting, I guess I’ll have to try the chalkboard paint one day soon too. It’s been in my garage forever!

Love the HomeGoods find and what you did to it!! You have beautiful ideas… so happy I found your blog!! PS — I found a horse head lamp today at HomeGoods which was black. Did not like the black so….I think a can of spray paint is in it’s future for sure! I am working on setting up an empty bedroom into my craft/office space so I figured I could paint the horse head a fun color! Also love the painted clocks!! Michele M
