Behind the scene of the DIY magazine photo shoot
I’m really thrilled to share this little glimpse into the behind the scene of our DIY magazine photo shoot. I was so nervous to open my home to strangers. I don’t know if all or most bloggers feel like this but there is always doubt for me that my house isn’t finished enough, not cleaned enough, too small, too suburban, too eclectic….too whatever!!! I come up with all kinds of strange things. I know that I will never feel like I’m finished and it is easy to always just show the cleaned areas on my blog.
But when a crew rolls in to take photos then you can’t hide imperfections and messes, nope, it’s all out there.
I had been emailing and texting with Lacey (the stylist and writer) for quite some time and was so excited to finally meet her. When my doorbell rang on Sunday afternoon, I felt like hugging her immediately but I didn’t want to scare her off! LOL. We looked at our house and then went on a little shopping trip to Target and TJMaxx. We didn’t find much and it turned out we didn’t need much more because I have a lot (#hoarder) and Lacey was able to ship other things needed ahead of her. In fact my basement was housing a stack of boxes and my garage was filled with beautiful flowers.
Lacey is a true “Jack of all trades”. I love her 😉 She knows so much and is involved in so much. Check out her business by clicking HERE.
The next day I got to meet John (the photographer) and Julian. John actually doesn’t even live far away from me. You have to see his Work at John Bessler Photography (click HERE). He knows his stuff!!
They came in and did their job and I followed them around helping wherever I could. I loved seeing what John does with photos and what type of equipment he uses.
Here are some photos I took of our two busy days and I loved every messy second of it (and nope those bedroom pillows didn’t make the cut):
Filtering lighting from windows:
Lacey and I testing the position for our family photo:
Working hard :
Most beautiful flower props:
And kitchen props too:
And we found some new gorgeous vases at Target on sale for the mantel which look great with the pillows I painted and shared on Monday (click HERE):
I think I created some pho soup addicts because we had it two days in a row. I actually crave it everyday.
If you haven’t tried it yet then I’m telling you that you just have to.
And I think that’s it for today. I don’t want to give too much away. I now have to wait for a year for the feature to come out. Pins and needles I tell ya 😉 Oh and if you are wondering where my hubby was, he was there, he actually had off. But he was hiding in the basement most of the time and only joined us for lunch.
I hope you enjoyed the little sneak peek .

A huge congratulations to you, Julia! A much deserved feature from a lovely lady!! I love behind the scenes posts! It’s fun to see tricks of the trade, what gets swapped out/pulled from other rooms, etc. Can’t wait to pick up a copy and see your smiling face.

I live in Fresno,CA and we have lots and lots of SE Asian food. Love Pho. We just found a new place right around the corner from us called Pho Paradise and it really is!!
Oh so jealous!!! I’d eat it any time of the day. You could wake me in the middle of the night and I’d eat it 😉
So exciting! It looks gorgeous, and so do you!
Thank you! I feel like I look crazed. It was kinda crazy for sure.
So much fun! I loved seeing how many props and flowers they brought into your home. Can’t wait to see what made the final cut! 🙂
I wish I could have kept all the props, but we used most of my stuff.
I love seeing all the behind the scenes photos from of your house!! I know you must have been so excited / nervous and had a blast all at the same time!! Can’t wait to read the article and see all the stunning pics!
You know how much fun it is because of your own amazing feature. Thank you!
Your home is beautiful. The pictures are stunning. Do you get to keep the props and items they used to “stage”? I hope that you do. I love that colorful painting to the left of the mantel. Can’t wait to see the reveal in the magazine!
Thanks Sherri, I painted the painting. I unfortunately didn’t get to use all the props but they didn’t use all that much different stuff. It was mostly my own.
SO fun!! Can’t wait to see 🙂 🙂

So fun and exciting! And after seeing these pictures, I’ve realized that the thing missing from my morning routine is ironing my bed; I’ll have to start doing that 😉

Thanks Danielle!
So exciting Julia! Everything looks gorgeous!!
Thanks Sarah
They look like a well oiled machine! So neat to see how it all works!
They totally are! They have really cool jobs
A year?! I can’t wait to see it, can’t believe it’s that long! My biggest head-smacking moment after the BHG shoot was that I didn’t feed the people who came to my house anything. I was so distracted and overwhelmed I never thought to get food. They were given only water, it was like being in prison. So stupid of me! But back to this…everything looks seriously, seriously gorgeous 🙂
LOL, well we all agreed on the food thing and chipped in. I wasn’t like amazing Katja who cooked a great healthy spread for them and had an amazing table setting in the back yard. Ain’t nobody have time for that. But Katja is good at everything so no surprise here 😉
Julia, I’m so sorry I missed this!! Sometimes I have trouble with blogs updating on my blogroll??? So, so excited for you! Your home looks gorgeous, and you’re perfect for DIY magazine!
Oh gosh Pam don’t be sorry. I have a huge problem with bloglovin right now. Nothing ever shows as read anymore. But that’s not my only problem. This moved blog of mine is killing me and nothing is working right. Don’t know what I was thinking when I decided to move it before Christmas. So many hours wasted trying to fix nonsense.
Your home is gorgeous! What a dream come true to be featured in a magazine!
I LOVE PHO and am also an addict! Do you make it yourself? I am lucky to have a great restaurant down the street from my office.
WOw…your home is beautiful, which I actually knew already:-) Can’t wait to see it on prints, so happy for ya!Hugs
Thanks my friend
I love seeing behind the scene pictures. Looks like it was a lot of fun. Julia, your home looks amazing and I can’t wait to see it in print!
Thanks Darnetha, it was a total blast
OH how exciting Julia, congrats on the coming magazine feature. I can’t wait to get my hands on it when it’s out. Make sure to let us know!
Thanks Bettina, it will be so hard to wait for a year until it comes out.
What in the world took them so long to recognize you?
Haha, you are funny!
Thanks Kristin, can you believe she asked me last week to paint the walls black now? I really don’t know what goes on in her mind sometimes.
